The latest report on Nkandla cost just R26 000 – a payment that Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko had made to the “experts” on culture and architecture.

This has just been unveiled in Nhleko’s answer to a question in Parliament from Dianne Kohler Barnard, Democratic Alliance MP and spokesperson on police. She asked Nhleko about the total amount spent on the Nkandla report, which he released on May 28.

“The only expenses that were incurred specific to Nkandla report were for the architectural and cultural experts. The total cost for the experts was R26 000,” said Nhleko.

Nhleko’s report found that the additions to Zuma’s private residence at Nkandla – a swimming pool , amphitheatre and visitors’ centre – were essential for the president’s safety, and therefore he did not have to pay a cent for it.

The report included some bizarre videos, including one with an interview with a “culture expert”, who said that a cattle kraal played a very important role in Zulu culture; the other goal of such a pen was to protect animals.

However, Nhleko said the new pen that was built at Nkandla was not built for cultural practices. It wasn’t even a pen, but an animal camp that included a tunnel for cattle and a chicken run.

The “architectural expert” explained why the amphitheatre was essential to prevent landslides.
