Johannesburg - Johannesburg would spend nearly R2 billion on a road infrastructure upgrade over the next three years, the Saturday Star reported.

Johannesburg executive mayor Parks Tau said the project was part of a R110 billion strategic infrastructure investment over the next 10 years.

"We are confident that this investment will address most of the major issues raised by business and contribute to the rejuvenation of the city's premier financial and commercial districts," Tau was quoted as saying.

The project aimed at repairing and rebuilding roads including the M1 and M2 as well as major routes serving commercial areas such as Sandton and Rosebank.

According to the report, R180 million would be spent on upgrading the Soweto Highway.

"We are aware of the public's frustration about potholes and will be spending almost R80 million on patching and fixing cracks," Tau said.

"However, our primary focus is the long term rehabilitation of the road network."
