Durban – Umgeni Water intends spending R3bn on water infrastructure, the KwaZulu-Natal water utility's chairperson said on Wednesday.

β€œIn response to customer water demands and to eliminate backlogs, Umgeni Water has committed R3bn for bulk potable water supply infrastructure development,” Andile Mahlalutye said.

Umgeni Water's master plan intended matching water resources with projected demand. About R1bn would be used for current and future growth, another billion for rural development, and R800m for upgrading and rehabilitating infrastructure.

Mahlalutye said the Northern Aqueduct Booster Pump Station would enhance water supply to the eThekwini metropolitan municipality and eliminate water interruptions in northern areas, such as Ntuzuma.
