R400 000 reward offered for info on cop killing

2015-03-30 22:06

Johannesburg - Police are offering a reward of up to R400 000 for information that could lead to the arrest of a group of people who shot dead two police officers in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Monday.

"The safety and well-being of members of the SAPS is a priority and all necessary measures are being put in place to ensure that our members are protected," said spokesperson Noxolo Kweza in a statement.

Two police officers were shot dead and the third injured by unknown men on the N3 south on Sunday.

One officer died on the scene and a second died later in hospital. A third was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

A reward was also offered for those who could give information on the police officer who was shot dead on Tuesday while responding to a robbery at Park Station.

"The national commissioner General Riah Phiyega, as well as the management team of Gauteng in particular, takes this matter very seriously," Kweza said.

"A comprehensive strategy has been finalised and is being implemented. Amongst the issues the strategy talks to is continual situational awareness of the members, training and utilisation of personal safety gear."

Nine police officers had been killed in Gauteng since the beginning of the 2014/15 financial year, he said.

Please resource these people adequately through quality training and not send them to be sacrificial lambs for the system's failures

      TheOldCynical - 2015-03-31 00:43

She say "we are taking this very seriously". What about all the other crime? The people are scared Riah. the criminals are taking over and you make dumb speeches. See what corruption does to a country? Your police are fat, corrupt and useless. You walk around with medals you did not deserve. Now that is the reason for all of this. Blame your self and you useless police.

      Hennie Vermeulen - 2015-03-31 07:44

So the Axe murder on the Breda family has just gone quiet. 3 People brutally murdered and 4th one seriously injured. Murdered used an Axe. Which means clearly a crazy person. In Breda case. There is no reward. Nor an arrest. Its just swept under the carpet 2 months down the line. Im not taking away from a police person being murdered. But why is normal citizens lives worth nothing.

      Ryan Zander - 2015-03-31 08:02

Give police officers their powers back. They are to afraid to shoot at criminals as they get charged which I feel is dead wrong. If you point a fire arm at an officer or shoot at them you must take the consequences. No more Mr nice guy.

      Jacob Zumaasak - 2015-03-31 08:17

Rather give that money to the families of the cops, like there is gonna be any consequences for these criminals when arrested.

  • Stephan van Aswegen - 2015-03-30 22:14

Why only just rewards for cop killing!!!! What about other normal people that died every day.

      Dawood Roberts Omar - 2015-03-30 22:17

      Good point

      Whitessheet Kaukau - 2015-03-31 00:23

I wouldnt give them about my boss who was robbed and killed last year? Not 1 cent was offered, i think he deserved the same life.

      Nick Bozman - 2015-03-31 10:43

It is called paying for consultants, that is the ZANC way.

  • Jako Pottas - 2015-03-30 22:26

9 cops killed in a year 400 k reward! What about all the farm murders why not a 400k reward for each of them???

      kerrilee.nelbroncho - 2015-03-30 23:04

Yip 9 cops and about 4250 on average civilians this year but no reward no outcry. The one shooter in custody is out on parole for armed robbery. Sentences are too lenient and so is parole.

      Victor Peachey - 2015-03-31 08:28

I see the mayor of Ekuhurleni visited the survivors of an illegal miner shoot out in Benoni never heard of him visiting a famers family. He can visit gangsters but not law abiding TAX paying citizens.

  • Murtle Jacobus - 2015-03-30 22:27

    Well said

  • Nhlotini Jonni - 2015-03-30 22:28

Training ,death sentence, tightening the law is the only solution than reward for every cop killed everyday by criminals. If they are finally caught they will be out within a week.

  • Rollingstone Brown - 2015-03-30 22:39

    faki mali uzobona

  • Albert Dangarembizi - 2015-03-30 22:41

Phiyenga is useless, she must go. She's failing to put measures to counter what these criminals are doing

  • Maelly Elliott - 2015-03-30 22:44

Reward ???wat bout other citizens of these country?Let police do their job to arrest those killers

  • Bertus Pretorius - 2015-03-30 22:49

Again, this shouldn't happen in the first place. Laying a wreath and paying for policemen's funerals should NOT be the norm it has become recently. This police commissioner has failed the brave men and women in the police force, not only by taking away their pride as a police force, but also making their lives meaningless. Get the right damn person in to lead the police without fear or favour. Then only might this crime crisis take a turn for the better.

      cobienk - 2015-03-31 06:46

      Fully agree with you

  • Themba Madabeni - 2015-03-30 22:52

Only if the reward was for one who will bring back the dead.... I hate how this government money is spending our tax money... Use that money to train cops like soldier, let them stop eating kfcs

      Firefly - 2015-03-30 23:21

      Well said Themba!!

  • kagiso - 2015-03-30 23:06

This sector needs to be professionalised lot's of fat police officers, inadequate to do a proper job. And really police must start building relationships with the communities, these thugs live in our communities but people are afraid to report them, because they fear for the safety and police and trustworthy, get rid of phiega get a qualified policeman, and get rid of the new minister. To be honest in terms of crime the country is in a deep crises. You patch one side the other side leaks, Education, Health, Crime. The government has dismally failed.

      cobienk - 2015-03-31 06:47

So true. I'm with you 100%

  • Mphonyana Msimango - 2015-03-31 00:13

I do not see a reason why should the police management put an offer to the public to unmask the killers, I know someone somewhere saw what had happened. My appeal is to those who has witness the shooting to come forward with the information, please help the police to arrest the culprits. May their souls rest in peace and bereaved families find closure. Together we're fighting crime.

      Sibusiso Mhlongo - 2015-03-31 02:27

Mpho the problem is that they will not come forward unless they know that they will get something.

  • Yvonne Maree - 2015-03-31 00:50

These men died in the line of duty. In this case I agree with the reward. If people are not afraid to kill policemen, nothing will stop them and no one will be safe. So sorry for their families. And if they left children behind I would like to say to them: so sorry little ones, that you have lost your father. We are proud of them and we salute them!

      cobienk - 2015-03-31 06:49

Well said Yvonne. I absolutely agree with you

Yvonne, 1000 thumbs up from me too...

  • Sibusiso Mhlongo - 2015-03-31 03:11

I read some of the comments made here and I felt very bad when I noticed that some people r so heartless that they choose to complain about their tax money being wasted as if the murdered policemen didn't pay tax. we rely on the policemen and women to protect us, so if someone attacks and kills them it shows that that person is very dangerous to our society, and as such the person must be apprehended, prosecuted and sentenced if found guilty. people must understand that some cases r high profile and should be approached as such. an attack on a police official is an attack on the state. when incidents like these occur we should come together and forget about our differences for the sake of our beloved country. furthermore we should leave politics out of this and concentrate on finding solutions that will assist our brothers and sisters in blue to fight crime.

      Kurt Kassen - 2015-03-31 07:59

Thank mhlongo people moan about tax as if they are the only ones paying tax police nurses and wardens every1 pays tax except prisoners

      Katlego Phiri - 2015-03-31 14:44

That is a constructive opinion. That's what what I like to read. Rational thinking. Very well Sibusiso

  • Tumi Motlatla - 2015-03-31 04:50

Shoot to kill. It's that simple......

  • Kgabane Lesetja - 2015-03-31 05:28

U point them today tomorow justice say no enough evidence they come out n kill u,they must seach for them until they make arrest

  • Lesley Da Les - 2015-03-31 06:21

Police should change their attitude towards members of the community, teach them how to approach pple, make sure they are disciplined as as well.

  • Lesley Da Les - 2015-03-31 06:24

Still looking for senzo meyiwa's killers

      Zuza Hue Deyi-mjoli - 2015-03-31 11:54

  • Majuda Wisdom - 2015-03-31 06:50

Sb mthembu no one has asked u to feel sorry for the life lost in the line of duty what u should do its just to shut up

  • Nico Swanepoel - 2015-03-31 06:55

Agreed. Why should the police offer a reward? How about using your "investigative kills" and hunt them down...... or is that no longer a requirment to become a policeman?

  • Andre Kapp - 2015-03-31 07:25

They have one of the culprits in custody...just ask him nicely who his buddies were! There are ways and means - why waste more money!

  • Mike Monaheng - 2015-03-31 07:34

Allow the cops to draw their weapons and be battle ready when approaching suspects..

      John Smith - 2015-03-31 09:05

When one approaches another with a drawn firearm he is a threat to the life of the other. The other then has the right to kill in self defence. Point a gun at me, I'll shoot in self defence.

      Mike Monaheng - 2015-03-31 11:02

Yes John but police must first be shot at then they can draw their weapons and fire back, too late then..

  • Mike Monaheng - 2015-03-31 07:41

Can you sense the war piyega? are competent piyega? swallow your pride criminals have declared war on you, condolences to those families...

  • Solomon Malesela - 2015-03-31 07:50

bring back general cele #shoot to kill

      Sbulelo Sobee Sobekwa - 2015-03-31 15:07

Thats the solution my brother, at his service time there was not such killings. Bring back General Cele.

  • Juanita Golgaves - 2015-03-31 07:55

WTF???? Why are the thousands of ordinary citizens of this country, who pay the SAPS salaries, not important enough to have rewards offered for their murders ?? Why ???
