R4m power bill normal - Johannesburg

2012-12-04 09:12

Johannesburg - The City of Johannesburg has surprised residents of a townhouse complex with a massive electricity bill of more than R4.2m and the city says it’s perfectly acceptable.

The Windsor East townhouse complex with 12 units recently got an electricity bill of R4.2m, reported The Star.

The bill is one of many that have slipped through the city’s warning system which is triggered if a statement is 5% higher or lower than a consumer’s average monthly consumption.

Another Johannesburg resident was left frustrated after struggling to get an explanation for his account of R958 000 for a month’s electricity.

“We have been to the City of Joburg six times, to no avail. To add insult to injury, they are adding interest,” said Dion Baumann.

David Gadney received a bill for R2.2m for an empty building in Benrose, which was being renovated.

His bill has shot up from R2.2m to R2.9m since reporting the matter and unknown meter numbers have been listed on his account.

A city official said the townhouse complex was a big power user and their account was for a period of 1 019 days but admitted that the account was based on estimated readings.

Just Crazy wtf is the ANC going to do? NOTHING. DA for 2014! they were helping all people no matter what colour.

      nrgx.nrg - 2012-12-04 09:26

"based on estimate readings"...how about I estimate? I estimate i owe you F-ALL!

      frank.vankaapstad - 2012-12-04 09:43

It's JZ's African way and it isn't going to change! Remember the article about how municipalities are charging consumers 5x to 6x times more for electricity than they are purchasing it for from ESKOM? Here is a prime example of it. Combine faulty metering, estimated billing and inflated prices and this is what you get.

      frank.kistler.31 - 2012-12-04 09:53

      @ Frank....i agree fully....here's your account sir...TAKE it n go..take it.....and GO lol :)

      sam.antha.35574406 - 2012-12-04 10:20

So it's ANC's fault people? Well I live in the DA run Cape Town municipality, and received a R5000 bill for a month consumption while I usually pay R150... City said: "must be a mistake, but you've got to pay or we disconnect you." Yes it was a mistake they made a random estimate without checking the meter... I actually owed them only 92 rands... What is the DA going to do? Nothing.

      vambozha.mutemi.9 - 2012-12-04 10:35

Only Ironman can get that bill

Who gets the Meter reading Tender ? How much is it worth? Are they family of the Mayor ? Whoever it is should be fired instantly - this is a disgrace. Ekurhuleni have it sorted - I do my own meter readings for power and water and submit these online via a web portal. I check my billing against the readings I have recorded and I am charged accurately. The EEM was 11 former towns on the East Rand - if they can get it right why can't [ or won't ] Johannesburg ? Which one is World Class now?

all of you people calling these failures as the african ways are campaigning so effectively for DA. Sometimes I have no sympathy for you people. You want DA to win but you insult the very voters who can get the DA to win. You people are so brainy.

      heathway.master - 2012-12-04 22:39

Rupeshhari, you have a good point there mate. I will go down and wash all the dust off your feet, if you promise to vote DA, and contribute to the downfall of the outrageously evil ANC in power at present.

      allan.rosenberg.752 - 2012-12-05 07:00

@samantha8001- wow only R92 per month for electricity. Lets all move to CT. They are not subsidizing Soweto

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-12-05 07:21

Rupeshari - i think the people referring to 'the African way'is making a tongue in cheeck reference to Jacob Zuma's speech from a few weeks ago where he talked about 'the African way'...not necessarily a racist comment. http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/Zuma-Solve-problems-the-African-way-20121102

      DarrenCooper68 - 2012-12-05 09:30

@ Rupeshhari. It is not the responsibility of anyone in this forum to convince anyone else. Terms like the "african way" are born of observation, look north and observe, then compare and form your own opinion. If the majority do simply not see what is going the old saying "In a democracy, the people get the government they deserve" applies

      goyougoodthing - 2012-12-05 11:42

This samantha troll... a bill of R150 - where do you live? In a cave with a single lightbulb? Methinks you be lying

      sam.antha.35574406 - 2012-12-05 18:14

A troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages. Well my comment is neither of these adjectives. I don't spend my life on news 24 insulting people like some News24 readers seem to enjoy doing, I comment when I have something to add to a debate, when I have time. Sorry I have a busy life, I don't sit my bum in front on news24 all day. I did have an issue with my Eskom bill in Cape Town, and yes i only pay R150 per month for a small 2 bedroom flat. It's not a cave, paying R150 is what a lot of people pay. It's a bit scary that paying R150 is seen as a lie, how much energy are you wasting if you pay more than that? Maybe some people should reconnect to the real world. And it took a little over 7 months to sort out. I'm just tired of DA/ANC political agendas... and all these people who come to this forum to moan, whine, and be bitter about everything. People don't even realise that politicians as a whole are failing us. And DA is in the same boat. They surely know how to make sure constantia looks clean to keep their voters... but again, since yesterday there is no water in khayelitsha... and many people are still waiting for water trucks to come. WOuld you live more than one day without water and without being highly irritated? If you say yes, then people you are hopeless.

      karel.vanrensburg.56 - 2012-12-04 21:33

Yes, fight the problem, not the people.

      rupesh.hari.7 - 2012-12-04 22:15

all of you people calling these failures as the african ways are campaigning so effectively for DA. Sometimes I have no sympathy for you people. You want DA to win but you insult the very voters who can get the DA to win. You people are so brainy. Anyway, the last time I check I thought the whites born here are african too. Just thought I'd mention that.

      Ollie - 2012-12-05 00:50

@Rupeshhari It's Zuma who coined the phase, the African way not the white mans way, so when referring to the African way comment white people are not included. However this is not a group people anyway but a mind set of those like Zuma who think rather than follow a western way to prosperity South Africa must build itself on other African models. So to clarify when you here one say this the "African way" in such context they are not referring to whom they regard as African but those of whom are of this mindset.

  • paul.stanley.5621 - 2012-12-04 09:52

If you work this out, 1019 days equates to around 32 Months, and its for 12 units, that works out to just short of 11 grand per month...I dont know where the hell they get that. I run a 650 sq mtr house with all kinds of electrical items, and my electricity comes to around 2500.00 per month. The complex however should be monitoring its own readings. I own a property in a complex and we monitor our own reading so we know exactly what we owe...no estimates there, and never a problem.

What I don't get is why they got a account dating for a period of more than two and a half years? If they had not paid the bill the power to the complex would have been cut long time ago. And if they never received any accounts for this period you cannot suddenly produce some ridiculous bill? The worst is the arrogance and incompetence of officials, instead of finding the problem they just keep on denying that there it exists.

  • nelbj - 2012-12-04 09:57

This another one of those "lame" articles in which all the interesting questions remain unanswered. Eg. why did the whole development not pay electricity for 3 years? !! Why did the municipality rely on "estimates"? Are there no electricity meters? Where the meters bypassed? Or who connected them to the grid without installing and registering a meters? I feel sorry for them, but they must have known that the bomb will drop some day, if they never paid for electricity.

  • werner.schyns.9 - 2012-12-04 10:00

I our block of 14 units (in Durban) we have a similar problem with water meter readings. Our bill has gone up from the regular R700pm to R2 000pm. Recently I saw how the meter was read. Vehicle arrives and parks on the pavement. Driver stays in vehicle presumably with a clipboard in hand. Passenger gets out and walks to the meter between the pavement and our fence. Passenger calls out the numbers on the meter. All this on a very busy road while many noisy vehicles pass by. We will now do our own readings daily and compare them to the figure given on the account.

Most frightening of all is the utter lack of logic. Townhouse complex, 12 units, R4 200 000 bill for electricity. Logically, it can't be right. But if you aren't born with logic, you'll never be logical.

If you charge massive amounts it makes your books look good and the longer you can take to fix the queries the longer you can pretend that you are not making a huge financial loss, and hide all the money you are funneling into your own pockets...

I've started a petition for SA taxpayers in support of the opposition parties' motion of no confidence in Pres Zuma. This motion will be debated on 28 March 2013, and as JZ looks to be set for a 2nd term, it is of crucial importance. Please take the time to sign and share this. Thank you. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/372/889/450/sa-taxpayers-support-opposition-parties-motion-of-no-confidence-in-president-zuma/

....and these imbeciles want to have e-tolling??? How will they ever control that???

  • avanwyk2 - 2012-12-04 11:33

Let's calculate this. 1019 days is abt 40 months. R4200000 divided by 40 equals R105 000 divided by 12 consumers equals R8750 per month for 1 townhouse for electricity. City Of Johannesburg you think it's reasonable!! Someone must get fired!!

      allan.rosenberg.752 - 2012-12-05 06:31

Lets calculate this- R4 200 000 divided by 12 760 citypower workers equals R320 onto each x/mas bonus. Yep- sounds reasonable

See, this is why I phone in my actual readings. When the municipalities start estimating things just go completely pear-shaped! And getting that error fixed by the complete and utter incompetent workers are next to impossible. You would have better luck getting the current government to accept its wrongdoings!
