A DOG in Howick has tested positive for rabies and concerns that the dog’s canine companion may also carry the disease have been raised.

The dog is believed to have been diagnosed by a local vet and was euthanased.

Fears about the dog’s companion having contracted the disease have been raised and although it is safer to euthanase a dog that is suspected to have contracted the disease, the dog is now under quarantine.

A source, who could not be named, said quarantining a dog who was living with a rabid dog was not an ideal situation as there was a slight risk of a outbreak of the disease.

The infected dog is believed to have contracted the disease from a jackal or a mongoose or any rabies-carrying wildlife.

State vet Allen Still appealed to Howick residents to have their animals vaccinated as soon as possible.

He said although the disease could not be contained with the wildlife roaming the area, vaccinating animals would stop it from spreading among domestic animals and people
