Durban - As the main race in the Vodacom Durban July approaches, Gold Circle racing analyst Warren Lenferno gave News24 his predictions.

“What a fine day we are having and the races that have already taken place have been great. I will try and guide you through which horses are worth following.”

He said that picking a winner in the main event was a tough task, but would be between two horses.

“In the big race to try and find the winner is like trying to find a needle in a haystack but if we give it a go my first choice would be number 2, Wylie Hall and second would be number 10, Legal Eagle. If the latter were to beat the former I also wouldn’t be surprised,” he said.

“For the placings I would say Number 5, Majmu and Number 1, Futura. Those are my selections and I hope they run fast and earn you some money,” Lenferno added.

Over R100m is expected to be paid out in winning bets, and the spend on betting on course and off-course will top R220m, with the French tote formally co-mingling with the local tote for the main race for the first time.

Vodacom Durban July itself contributes over R220m in direct spend into the local economy, most of which emanates from the Gauteng visitors who drive down for the weekend, making up more than half of the 55 000 strong crowd at Greyville Racecourse, and contributing over R150m just through transport, accommodation, tickets, entertainment, restaurants and clothing for the Vodacom Durban July.
