Pretoria - Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir, 46, is a qualified engineer with shares in various foreign companies in the Czech Republic and in the Seychelles.

According to papers filed in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, Krejcir's mother still lives in the Czech Republic and was apparently a wealthy and successful businesswoman.

Krejcir qualified in the Czech Republic as an engineer and still had business interests in the country of his birth, which is now seeking his extradition from South Africa so that he can start serving lengthy prison sentences.

He and several co-accused, including a number of policemen, are currently on trial in the High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in Palm Ridge, on charges of kidnapping, assault and attempted murder relating to the alleged torture of Bheki Lukhele, whose brother Doctor is alleged to have disappeared with 25kg of tik belonging to Krejcir.

He was convicted in separate criminal trials in the Czech Republic of fraud, customs duty fraud and evasion and breach of trust and was sentenced to several lengthy terms of imprisonment, which he never started serving.

He escaped from custody in the Czech Republic in 2005 and fled via other countries to the Seychelles, where he acquired citizenship in 2006.

The Czech Republic issued an international arrest warrant for him and attempted to extradite him from the Seychelles to the Czech Republic, but he left the Seychelles for South Africa in 2007 before a decision on the extradition application could be made.

He arrived in South Africa in 2007 using a false passport under a false name and was arrested by the South African Police on his arrival. He denied being Radovan Krejcir and refused to have his fingerprints taken.

After his arrest, he applied for refugee status and was released from prison in June 2007. He is currently subject to extradition proceedings to have him extradited to the Czech Republic.

The High Court in July 2012 granted an order authorising the holding of an income tax enquiry into his affairs and Sars in November last year obtained a provisional preservation order against his assets.

The order was confirmed in the High Court in Pretoria on 22 May this year.
