Cape Town - Metrorail has confirmed it was in fact one of their employees who died after falling onto the train tracks in her pursuit of a woman suspected of trying to board the train at Harfield station without a ticket on Tuesday.

After initial reports of the commuter falling onto the tracks, Metrorail said the employee had been injured at 06:30 on platform one.

Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott said the woman had reportedly been chasing after the fare evader when she appeared to have slipped and fell between the train and the platform.

"She succumbed to her injuries en route to hospital," Scott confirmed.

Metrorail regional manager Richard Walker said the woman was a member of the customer services team at its Wynberg depot.

"Their pain is our pain and we hold them in our prayers as they struggle to come to terms with their untimely loss," he said.

The incident would be fully investigated, Walker said, so that her family could find closure after the tragedy.

A total of 27 trains were subjected to variable delays as a result, and four had to be cancelled.
