Ramaphosa apologises for buffalo bid

2012-09-20 13:47

Johannesburg - Businessman Cyril Ramaphosa has apologised for bidding millions of rand on a buffalo cow and her calf.

"Yes, I did put a bid and that was a mistake on my part," he told SAfm on Thursday morning.

"It was a mistake. I regret it. It was a mistake to even put up my hand to do so.

"I've been chastised by some of my good comrades, and even before they chastised me, I did admit that was a mistake.

"I regret it because it is an excessive price in the sea of poverty. I belong to a community and it was one of those moments when I was blind-sighted," said Ramaphosa.

Expelled African National Congress Youth League president Julius Malema recently criticised Ramaphosa for this in an address to miners on an unprotected strike at Lonmin platinum mine, in which Ramaphosa reportedly owns shares.

Malema told the miners Ramaphosa had bought the buffalo for R18m.

According to a City Press report in April, Ramaphosa bid up to R19.5m for the buffalo cow and her calf at a game auction near Rustenburg, but was outbid by Bloemfontein businessman Boet Troskie.

Ramaphosa said later that his budget did not allow him to pay R20m for the buffalo cow.

"I spent my budget on other animals. And, like any businessman, you must know when to stop," he said at the time, according to the City Press report.

  • richard.zanner - 2012-09-20 13:55

So he apologizes for bidding so much money on a cow in a country of poverty. How is this helpful as he is not offering to part with that money to help the poor either. Just means he does not get the cow and gets to keep the money.

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-09-20 14:12

Load of twaddle. He is a businessman. He would have made a profit in the end - that's what business people do. In the process they create jobs. He is apologizing to people who don't understand business; people who want a handout.

      rupesh.hari.7 - 2012-09-20 14:13

I am sorry. I don't think this man owes anything to the poor. I presume he used legal means to get his money. He can keep it. No need to apologizse.

      ann.murray.9279 - 2012-09-20 14:22

      Great logic Richard

      jackal666.daniel - 2012-09-20 14:23

Is this then effectively passing the "cow"?

      kala.bafazi - 2012-09-20 14:31

But he goes on to say that his budget did not allow for the R20 million for the buffalo. So was his intention then not to pay if he was the successful bidder?

      rofras.rassie - 2012-09-20 14:32

if you know the shanduka projects, you wouldnt be saying this cr@p. This man gives back to the community.Lazy people should stop expecting the poor to feed them.

  • Erna - 2012-09-20 14:00

Why does the apology make a difference - he had R19.5million to just give away on a cow. The apology doesn't change anything - he's not giving the R19.5 million to the poor!

  • louis.hager.12 - 2012-09-20 14:01

And what whould have happened if Cyril WON the bid?

  • Daniel Mah - 2012-09-20 14:02

damn how I wish I owned a buffalo

      lorain.maseko - 2012-09-20 14:29

Damn how i wish I owned 19 million, i wouldnt spend it on a cow that's for sure.

      paul.c.wadsworth - 2012-09-20 15:35

      Or a "Cash Cow"

  • pmalungana - 2012-09-20 14:02

You are forgiven my son, even a prodigal son was forgiven. We are all fallable ryt?

      kholofelo.theko - 2012-09-20 14:17

You are not forgiven my son, for, you failed to forgive Malema. lol

      tinotenda.panashe - 2012-09-20 16:07

No, you ask for forgiviness and yet you nailed Malema. Why should you get a reprive when you went all out to kill the youth league?

  • klipkop.degroote - 2012-09-20 14:02

whatever the rich are getting richer and the rest of us are struggling to stay afloat. Go on a diet you fat cat.

  • peter.fraser.92754 - 2012-09-20 14:05

Cowadunga !! Cant even say its a lot of bull ! Why apologise / Then apologise for the fancy cars/the fancy house/the fancy farms and fancy lifestyle.

  • tshepo.maganedisa - 2012-09-20 14:08

What is the big deal when he was outvoted by Boet Troskie, cant a black man compete against boers now.Everytime a black mand does something people always bring the issue of poverty on the table - i personally dont see anything wrong you should have outbid Mr. Troskie and let them cry even worse

      peter.fraser.92754 - 2012-09-20 14:20

Eish wena man tshepo.maganedisa.....leave black and white and boer out of it.You'r like Johnny One Note.Over and over and over the same comments about COLOUR.The man has a lot of money and must have had a guilty dream about Cow and Calf. There was NO need for him to apologise. He LOST the bid to a HIGHER bidder NOT against a boer !!The apology : Its all a ploy to put himself in a better light for who knows whom and reasons only known to him.

      christiaan.vanvuuren.9 - 2012-09-20 14:22

Tshepo this right here is a problem. I see the forums fill up with black people raging about rich white people but a rich black man you have respect for. Now let me make this clear, I also do not see a problem with Cyril's wealth. I do not care what race he is. From my point of view money does not choose race. Cyril is a good businessman and he earns what he has. But please be reasonable and have the same way of thought when it comes to rich white people. They earn what they have.

      ribie.sebe - 2012-09-20 14:24

Tshepo i dont see how colour comes in here. He chose to apologise because Malema made it a public story. had it not came out the way it did he was not goin to apologise. and why apologise for wanting to spend his money. Its not like its the taxpayers money. why is he apologising cos its not like he will give the money to the poor. for what is worth he could even have paid 30m for it, it was not going to make any diffrence to me

      leroy.reynolds.353 - 2012-09-20 14:25

you are blinded by your color, get a hobby and educate yourself, sorry to say money is not success. When you see what there is to be offered in this world, im sure your comments will look allot different!

      mantothieve.missingman - 2012-09-20 14:43

No Big deal , anc voters must just stop complaining , here you admit you dont mind him paying this type money for an animal while 90% of anc voters dont even have drinking water. If he wasnt an anc big shot he would not have this money , Go cyril next time pay 80 million !!

      sagebrush.bush - 2012-09-20 14:50

      Jaap - 2012-09-21 20:17

You and your "racist victim mentality" are really pathetic to say the least. But then what else can we expect.

  • smalefane - 2012-09-20 14:10

Don't apologize. It's your money. Well, as long as you remember the poor.

      ribie.sebe - 2012-09-20 14:25

      remember what exactly?

  • prince.zina - 2012-09-20 14:11

This Bloody Capitalist think we r blinded by his foolish apologetic antics to seek media attention for his personal gain.n truth is he care less for the poor class of this Country

      peter.fraser.92754 - 2012-09-20 14:14

Hear hear are SO correct !

  • Goodstuff - 2012-09-20 14:15

This BEE guilt I assume; another man who has earned his riches would never appologise for spending his hard earned cash, but Cyril obviously feels guilty over wanting to spend so much money when the opportunities afforded to him was because of BEE. That 20million should rather have been used to start business' that in turn create jobs.

      sedeshan - 2012-09-20 14:39

Or rather when he was spending money that should have been reaching the miners pockets in the first place! This guy is just another greedy thief!

  • ribie.sebe - 2012-09-20 14:18

it is his money and he can do as he please. why be apologetic about it.

      sisa.mtwana - 2012-09-20 18:30

No it's BEE money, please do ask me what BEE means. Find out what BEE businessmen or woman are suppose to do with their money.

  • osmaseko - 2012-09-20 14:18

heh heh heh and you still think Malema is not powerful mhhhhh?

  • bernard.geldenhuys2 - 2012-09-20 14:20

It's his money, he should spend it like he wants, doesn't owe an explanation to anyone. Malema on the other hand should give his money to the poor seeing that he is now the countries whistle blower on money being spent.

  • luke.dekoker - 2012-09-20 14:21

No cyril, easy come easy go.. right? "My budget did not allow me to pay R20m for the buffalo cow, I spent my budget on other animals"?? what a joke when there are so many poor anc voters that are still waiting for their Gold-pot/handout promises made 18 years ago while these fatcats rake it in..

  • nhla.prv - 2012-09-20 14:25

Oh so Juju was right ! He seems to know all the dirty laundry.. Is that why Cyril fired him?

  • hc12345 - 2012-09-20 14:26

How do you turn a communist into a capitalist? Show him the money!!!!!

  • lvhukeya1 - 2012-09-20 14:27

it's obvious dat our pres MALEMA made him change his mind.

  • Vic - 2012-09-20 14:30

So this happened some time ago, and he kept quiet. Now that he was outbid and exposed to poor hard working miners he is apologising. He should apologise to all those died in Marikana including police men and share the money amongst their families. Didn't his good comrades advise him that?

  • mantothieve.missingman - 2012-09-20 14:37

Who cares , its just your supportes who must enjoy there poverty while the cadre's love life and buy 18 million rand animals < ANC supporters please stop moaning!

  • thomas.g.loeser - 2012-09-20 14:39

What people from what struggle, he says to himself... I've moved on..... and the sooner they come to realise it, the better.....

  • keith.ngobeni - 2012-09-20 14:44

Why do Cyril Ramaphosa have to apologize for spending his own money? He can do whatever he want with his wealth as long as he doesn't use a public purse to purchase his personal dealings.

      mantothieve.missingman - 2012-09-20 14:50

And where do you think he made he's money from ?Had nothing to do with he's position in the anc ?

  • mart.botha - 2012-09-20 14:56

I have to say that the prevailing feelings of entitlement to wealth and the belongings of others amongst the majority of people in this country is a recipe for disaster. What Ramaphosa does with his money, providing it is legal and above board, has nothing whatsoever to do with anyone else...period. Illegal trade in wildlife however has become severely tainted and compromised and is the domain of international organised crime syndicates, sure to be attracted by this kind of price tag. Well known breeders of disease free buffalo are also known to breed and trade in rhino/harvest horn. Could this be linked PERHAPS ?

  • - 2012-09-20 15:07

Agreed, Refiloe. Unfortunately we South Africans show an arrogance and lack of compassion towards each other and other living beings..

I must admit I was shocked and dissapointed when I read that article in the newspaper. Yes it's his money regardless of how he arquired it but for a trade unionist who was fighting for such capitalist behaviour to do the same tendencies, certainly paints a bleak future for change in poverty elliviation in this country.

  • philemon.khantsi - 2012-09-20 21:06

Why the hell should he apologise for spending his own money, what you do with your money is your business, he can buy the entire zoo for all I care, so what!

      chloe.ras.9 - 2012-09-22 18:12

But don't you think there is something fundamentally wrong with spending that amount of money while there is still widespread and abject poverty in our land? And yes, it's his money that he's earned, but is it acceptable that there should be such a vast disproportion between earning capacities, not just in SA but worldwide>

Malema should expose all these people. Ramaposa only spent a lousy R2million on the Marikana victims families. Yet he was willing to splash 19million on a wild animal. 34 lives are worth a meer R2m. 1 baffalo worth R19m. From a unionist to a hardline capitalist. Your appology doesn't mean anythng! How do u sleep at night knowing that yo employees ear r4000 and u go and splash such astronomical amounts on a cow? Ubuntu doesn't exist!
