Johannesburg - A girl died following a seizure at her school in Johannesburg, the Gauteng department of education said on Friday.

Eyewitness News said the incident happened at Randpark Primary.

"It was after PE [physical education class] on Thursday as she was walking towards the swimming pool.

She had a seizure and the school called paramedics," spokesperson Charles Phahlane said.

Two teachers tried to resuscitate her as they waited for paramedics.

"The paramedics arrived, but they could not save her life."

Phahlane said the department had sent officials to the school to investigate what happened. It also sent trauma councillors.

The cause of death would be determined after a post-mortem.

That is terrible!! As a parent, I could not even begin to imagine what it would be like to get that phone call. I have a heart attack when I get a call from the school, only to realise it's about some arbitrary thing. Condolences to the family.

Sad :(. A friend's little sister collapsed and died in school last year. I cannot imagine being a parent and getting a call like that

This is really terrible. One can only hope that she was not pushed too hard during PE (as I know they tend to do at my child's school)... prayers going out to the parents!
