Tonga - A trainee sangoma accused of raping three children was warned by the Tonga Regional Court on Tuesday to pay his lawyer or be locked up.

Kenneth Sthembiso Metiso, 26, of Mdladla village near Malalane, Mpumalanga, appeared in court on charges of rape, a Sapa correspondent reported.

Magistrate Edgar Moletsane confirmed that the lawyer was not in court because Metiso had not paid him his fees.

"I will postpone this case until April to see whether you will be able to pay her or not. Failing to do that you will be locked up and all your bail money will be taken by the State," Moletsane said.

Metiso is out on R1 000 bail. He has pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape and one of skipping bail.

During his previous appearance in the Boschfontein Regional Court, Metiso told the court he never skipped bail, but was being treated at a sangoma's place in Mdladla village, near the Swaziland and Mozambican border, after falling ill.

He was initially arrested in 2012.
