Johannesburg - Reported rape cases in the Eastern Cape tripled this year compared with 2009, according to a report on Friday.

A total of 4 026 rape cases were opened in 2009-2010, the Dispatch Online reported. The number increased to 8 616 in 2010-2011.

The number has reached 12 451 during the 2011-12 financial year, ending March 2012, said social development superintendent-general Bea Hackula on Thursday.

Hackula released the police statistics during the department’s gender-based violence conference at the International Conference Centre in East London

“There is not necessarily more abuse. [The stats are] an indication that more people have broken their silence. For so long women and girls suffered in silence and did not report rape.

“But because of awareness campaigns more people now report rape cases, hence the rise in statistics,” she was quoted saying.

“There is not necessarily more abuse. [The stats are] an indication that more people have broken their silence. For so long women and girls suffered in silence and did not report rape." Does that make the figures ok?? wth?

Maybe this is why the anc want this traditional laws bill so much. Then their male membership can rape knowing the local chief(in the anc's pocket) will punish woman who speak out.

thats some bull ! If every more than 50% of the affected ppl broke the silence then we would see these figures going 2 40 000. Its very sad especially because nothing is being done about these freaks...t worst they get is 15 years which runs concurrently with what ever crime they have.... \concurrent my ass\ how about we pay our taxes concurrently with our spouses? .... The courts should do some justice and turn a blind eye to whoever kills a rappist

The Rape Issue. It a problem linked to our African culture - hard to understand but it is happening every day if not every hour in some areas and parts of our beloved continent. Ukutwala - snatching a lady is culturally thing in a number of people and it is respected by both the victim and the assailant. For example in the northern region of Malawi there is a system that allows a boy to still a girl mostly out of her will for a couple of weeks without trace, and parents expect to hear from the boys parents the news of their daughter (for them this is one way of getting marriage) for me its rape and he derseve jail. In Tanskie areas (South Africa) there is a system of girl snatching (ukutwala) and the same procedure is adhered to, where parents of the girl wait from the boys parents to come and announce of their daughter whereabouts. Now if the system is culturally linked - it need great care and many discussion forums especially with our elders - for they started the idea which is destroying our future. The time i will aim to marry i will get a lady who has experienced many trauma due to snatching system. My culture can some time bring harmony to the people in dances and food ceremonies or havoc (danger) in girl snatching and raping system. The local government, chiefs and the parents must assist to lobby in ending the system, we can get other means of proposing a girl without forcing her to marry me without her permission.

Agreed... and just like you said, our elders started this... religion, politicians, and government structures needs to fall away for humans to see real freedom... now calm down Christians, as you are always the ones throwing your toys out of the cot, i'm talking about ALL!!

@issa: does the woman have no say? Is she sometimes a willing participant? If this is an accepted practice, are these instances reported as rape?

It's become a national sport officially approved by the president.
