Kimberley - A 6-week-old baby allegedly raped by a man in Galeshewe, Northern Cape, has been discharged from a Kimberley hospital's intensive care unit and could be sent home later this week, The Star reported on Monday.

Gynaecologist Jan van Soest, who was part of a seven-person team that operated on the baby, told the newspaper the toddler would be examined under anaesthetic this week, and if everything was normal, she could be sent home.

The baby sustained extensive trauma to the inside and outside of her genitals, as well as bruising and severe tearing. There was no internal abdominal trauma.

Her perineum also had a tear and needed to be sutured and built back up.

"Although it is still very soon after the surgery, it is expected at this stage that she will be able to lead a normal life and have children of her own one day," Van Soest told the newspaper.

The man accused of raping the baby appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate's Court on Thursday. The case was postponed to 12 December for a formal bail application.
