Pretoria - Two Limpopo men were jailed for life on Wednesday for raping a 19-year-old girl, police said.

Jimmy Phalanda, 19, and Bashen Doctor Makoto, 23, were convicted in the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for raping the girl in 2009, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

"The victim was walking with her friends on the night of August 18 in 2009 when they met the suspects. They gang-raped her and police took no time to arrest them."

He said the pair had pending criminal charges.

"Phalanda has an outstanding rape case against him, while Makoto still faces five charges of armed robbery and a murder case at Mankweng police station."

This revolving door for criminals must be shut once and for all. Lets turn it into one way to hell for this scum. There should be no second chances for these animals. Lets invest in more prisons if there is no room. They should be grateful we don't have death sentence here in South Africa.

If you are found guilty(without a doubt) of rape, then you should be hung. End of story. Kids who aren't given hidings will continue with mischief. Criminals who aren't punished will continue to commit crimes. Shoot to kill!!!

why does it take +/- 3 years to get there?????

      Shannon - 2011-12-07 15:52

Exactly the question I was about to ask!! The mind boggles....

      Ann - 2011-12-07 15:56

At least they will be off the streets, but you are 100 % right - too many of these cases take far too long to prosecute. Still think that the death penalty should be brought back!!

      Kenny - 2011-12-07 16:01

Because of our f-ed up judicial system

  • bonginkosik - 2011-12-07 15:47

    halleluja Mr Magistrate...

  • makatika - 2011-12-07 15:53

I notice some people will do anything to get back to jail. Magistrate do them a favor and put them away for a long time now. I think anybody who get convicted and come and do crime again must be put away for good. I would rather pay the Tax man extra for that because each time they come out the one go back and the do that through hurting others

For how long will we have to feed them?

  • braamc - 2011-12-07 16:01

  • Larry - 2011-12-07 16:04

Good, I hope that this kind of sentence is kept up and that it also sends a clear message.

  • Peter - 2011-12-07 16:07

Slam, bam thankyou Mam!! All should be delt with this way!! They do not belong on the streets if they commit such selfish crimes.

  • Fanie - 2011-12-07 16:13

  • Lynn - 2011-12-07 16:26

Good and throw away the key. Too many of these criminals are released to continue their criminal careers.

  • Bogoshi - 2011-12-07 16:29

Maybe government should force the rapist to have sex change before they put them in for life with male inmates, that might help reduce these inhumane crime.

The judicial system needs to relinquish the notion that jail is a fitting PUNISHMENT for crime. The purpose of prisons should be a place of detention for those who, by virtue of their actions, are a threat to society. ALL persons arrested for crimes of violence - murder, attempted murder, rape, attempted rape, arson, assault, hijacking, armed robbery, rhino poaching, etc. - should be subjected to MANDATORY detention for life - for the safety of society! This implies that "bail" and "parole" (under ANY circumstances) are removed from the statute books - along with political interference such as the so-called "Presidential Pardon". This will act as a deterrent, and at the same time assure the safety of the people.

      Sean - 2011-12-09 13:11

I agree, and there should not be any excuse that the prisons are over-full - BUILD MORE!
