Johannesburg - Residents of an informal settlement in Krugersdorp West were shocked to discover rats feeding on the body of a man who had died in his shack.

The Daily Sun reported on Tuesday that the 47-year-old man had died alone about a week before his body was discovered by a neighbour, who noticed she hadn't seen him for a number of days.

According to a community leader, the man was still dressed and covered with a blanket, but the rats had chewed on his fingers and toes, and had even eaten parts of the T-shirt he was wearing.

The deceased was described as a popular man who made a living recycling cans and plastic.

The police were called, but said there was no evidence of foul play.

The man's sister was traced, and the body was taken to the mortuary, the newspaper reported.
