Reinforcements called to Cape fires

2013-01-28 17:18

Cape Town - Working on Fire said on Monday that additional teams have been called in to battle veldfires that are raging in the Western Cape, with resources already stretched to capacity.

In a statement, the organisation said that 14 of its teams are already deployed at fires which are burning near Cederberg mountains near Clanwilliam, Franschoek, Tulbagh and in the Uniondale area in the Eden District.

Spokesperson Linton Rensburg said a decision was taken to call in reinforcements from the Eastern Cape and the Free State, and another five teams will now assist "the already exhausted WoF teams in fighting these various veldfires which are currently burning".

According to Rensburg, 25 000ha of veld has already been destroyed in Clanwilliam alone.

Police said earlier that a 59-year-old man died in the fire which was reportedly sparked by lightning.

"Through the ongoing co-operation between WoF, various local municipalities, the Western Cape Provincial Disaster Management Centre, Cape Nature and various Fire Protection Associations we have largely been able to ensure that there is a co-ordinated response to fighting these fires."

In addition to the ground resources, WoF has also deployed 10 helicopter water bombers, 8 spotter planes and 8 fixed wing water bombers and 37 pilots to the Western Cape to assist with suppressing these veldfires, the statement said.

"Aerial firefighting resources have become a critical component of integrated fire management and they play a leading role in quickly suppressing fires in an initial aerial attack which consists of water bombing fires."

In the past eight weeks, WoF has assisted local authorities to suppress and control more than 50 veldfires in the Western Cape.

connecting natural disasters to politics - typical Zuma followers logic.

I feel horrible about the animals that die in these fires, not looking good at all, live in Paarl, smoke everywhere. The wind is not helping either. My thought are with those working hard to extinguish these fires.

      tmakwati3 - 2013-01-28 18:35

      i absolutely agree with Lizette

      osmaseko - 2013-01-28 18:39

They can get some farm workers to assist I am sure they are used to work under terrible this shouldn't be hard

      delish7564 - 2013-01-28 18:48

Wonder who would give you a thumbs down Lizette? Morons!!!

      Lizette van Wyk-WC - 2013-01-28 21:06

Mabhesha'nkone ZoSuthu-No offence taken. Let me help you. Do you know what mountains look like? These mountains are more than 1000m above sea level. These flames are up to 30m high, that is why we use helicopters, people can't extinguish these fires by hand using buckets. Give it rest, you don't have the brain capacity.

      mabheshankone.zosuthu - 2013-01-28 21:17

Lizette - helping is not only about firefighting. You could look after those affected. Or better yet, your precious animals. Your "thoughts" are useless to these victims. Your action is. Stop being such a dimwit. You're embarrassing all of us. Either you do something or hlala phansi, but whatever you do, do not say another word. Assomblief.

      Lizette van Wyk-WC - 2013-01-29 09:56

delish7564-Must be. I blame reversed evolution, no person can be this idiotic by choice. Harassing people on news24 seems to be a sport for children now? The product of the ANC. Racist hatred, ill informed and misled.

Working closely with WoFire over the past couple of months and being a old volunteer for the Stellenbosch Municipal Fire Department , I would openly and honestly like to request that all you political bulls**t spewing ,anti-growth right wing neanderthals please find yourself another hobby than being obvious trolls on a national news comment section. You are not even focusing on the actual issue at hand , you are only demonstrating why foreign investors think twice before putting money in S.A. And why the rest of the world thinks we are idiots. It is currently at the point were we need to claim to be Namibian in order to not be associated with you dumb ignoramuses. To my colleagues and old friends out there , Ngikufisela inhlanhla!

  • cathy.vanvollenstee - 2013-01-28 19:04

Small minded people making this into a racial issue? There are people putting their lives on the line here. mabheshankone.zosuthu and osmaseko why don't you try and at least act intelligent and show a bit of compassion for your fellow man.

      dante.schoeman - 2013-01-28 21:07

Mabesha go do the dishes and STFU !

  • beverley.burchellhardman - 2013-01-28 21:24

OMG I cannot believe the absolute drivel that is being spewed forth person remarks on a fire and gets attacked from all sides with comments that have absolutely NOTHING to do with fire!!

      mabheshankone.zosuthu - 2013-01-28 22:21

Sure, Lizette. You clicked on the forward tab? Very futuristic. Aren't you the little bright spark, now? Are you one of those dumb, "creative" types? Your fiction is quite amusing.

  • beverley.burchellhardman - 2013-01-28 21:44

Mabshesha .... I am not going to induldge ... I'm just sitting here laughing my head off ... seriously ... go google 'dullard' ... I rest my case!

      mabheshankone.zosuthu - 2013-01-28 21:46

ok - Bevvy. As it turns out my vocab is amazingly good. I'm sorry you were born a dullard. Hang in there, Bev.

      trudy.davies.31 - 2013-01-28 22:18

Wow, Bev. Amazing isn't it? I've seen this same drivel time and time again on ENCA's posts as well. Politics that has nothing to do with the actual issue at hand. I am saddened by the small mindedness of so many people in this country.

      mabheshankone.zosuthu - 2013-01-28 22:23

Arg, shame. Poor Trudie is "perturbed".

  • hetty.oliver - 2013-01-28 21:49

All praise and thanks for our Fire Fighters and WoF. They're doing a sterling job!

  • stormerbandit - 2013-01-28 21:50

aim not being funny but your mentality sound alot like malema to me.

      keith.ngobeni - 2013-01-28 22:37

@stomerbandit! Try not to pay any attention to this fool, he's an attention seeker full of idiocy in his watery brain! People like him there's nothing much going on in their lives, and the only way for him to feel happy! Is to keep posting garbage rantings on the site for just self-pleasing nothing else! Please don't entertain him just ignore this brainless fool.

      beverley.burchellhardman - 2013-01-28 22:41

its a wonder he has'nt uttered "don't touch me on my studio" yet!! :)

      mabheshankone.zosuthu - 2013-01-28 22:59

If keith.ngobeni isn't a house negro, he simply adopted a black name, like a lot of resident News.24 racists here.

  • dcm11 - 2013-01-29 13:23

Quite entertaining is Mabhesha'nkone ZoSuthu - he is smart and very clearly a terrible little troll. Bating all those who get hot under the collar. Backed up by his buddy "osmaseko', they think it jolly and I'll bet the more thumbs down they get the more chuffed they feel. Like it or not though - SA is stuffed. The ANC will never hand over power to another government and the country will continue to be run into the ground as the infrastructure crumbles and foreign investments dry up. Only the very rich and the ANC cronies will have comfort. Everyone else will flee or live in abject poverty / fear. And even if SA doesn't turn into another Zimbabwe, in time, it will be another DRC or Mali. It is just a matter of time.

As the Marketing Director for the Volunteer Wildfire Services and a volunteer wildland firefighter who fought in the initial attack on the fire line on Sunday Evening, it'd be great if you would include us in the line up of resources that are listed attending these fires. We have another team heading out today into the 36 degree heat, this after attending this and other fires throughout this week. Including a call out last night to Hout Bay. Foe more information on us, please email me at But we would really, really appreciate being mentioned! We give up our time, take off work and leave loved ones to help a greater cause. We are also completely self funded, so us being mentioned helps with attaining sponsorships. Thank you, yours, Patrick Ryan VWS Marketing Director.
