Report: Irregularities in transport tender

2012-06-21 14:22

Johannesburg - A Corruption Watch probe has found irregularities in a R13m tender awarded by the department of transport (DOT), the civil society organisation said on Thursday.

The department had awarded a tender to a company which had not fulfilled all the necessary requirements, and overpaid for services by R10m, it said in a statement.

Global Interface Consultancy won a tender to manage conference and communication services for the department of transport's international investor conference in June last year.

It had submitted a bid for R13.5m.

Losing bidder Indigo Design and Event Marketing bid R3.837m - about one-quarter of the winning bid.

Indigo Design, a BEE-accredited company, lodged complaints with the department, the Public Protector, and Corruption Watch (CW).

"CW’s further investigation into the DOT tender award revealed gross irregularities in the tender process," Corruption Watch said.

Corruption Watch had handed over its findings, as well as two cases involving irregular public tenders, to the public protector for further investigation.

It was in the process of formalising a working relationship with the protector.

"We will closely monitor the cases that we hand over to the Public Protector and we will assist her office with further evidence and information gathered from the public," said executive director David Lewis.

"It should be stressed that this case and each of the serious acts of corruption that we are investigating were reported by alert members of the public."

Comment from the department could not be immediately obtained.

Thanks for supplying that link... Its a good laugh. I like the CEO's description: "Pat has been in the Public Relations industry for over 30 years. He is a highly successful individual who possesses a rare combination of marketing and administrative skills. He has excellent connections in media and politics and has worked very closely with the community developing and coordinating the execution of numerous CSI initiatives. " >Possesses a rare combination of marketing and administrative skills. >30 years experience

      smili.fication - 2012-06-21 15:16

"He has excellent connections in media and politics..." MEDIA: NOPE POLITICS: OBVIOUSLY!

OMG. Just look at the fine collection of goons, incompetents and skebengas in that "team" - more like a gang, actually.

  • Sandra - 2012-06-21 14:43

      grant.hide - 2012-06-21 15:12

Just wait for the reshuffling, promotions and golden handshakes.

  • johns54 - 2012-06-21 14:52

This is just for a conference which will most probably result in NO returns (most likely no return)? WTF! So what do they do when the tender is for goods or professional services?

  • coenraad.vaneeden.5 - 2012-06-21 15:04

And so it goes on and will only STOP when nothing left

  • nigel.burgess.52 - 2012-06-21 15:21

It never stops. The greed and self enrichment of the ANC knows no boundaries. And when the well dries up, guess who will be blamed.

  • carolyn.myburgh - 2012-06-21 15:22

REALLY no way that surely would NEVER happen here ( good grief it happens so often it is barely news anymore, frustrating to live in a country like this

  • matthew.rensburg.1 - 2012-06-21 15:31

the flaw in investigative process is seekin an individual who is corrupt, instead of the bigger truth. how do u guys think the anc as an organisation funds its daily workings, like this big important conference comin up and their election campaigns? saw a very interesting documentary about the anc a few months back. makes everything we see now look like childs play. so much more behind tge curtain regarding any and every corruption charge aimed at any anc members over the years from sheik to zuma to mbeki. its a freakin mafia organisation seeking scape goats for wellbeing of the organisation

  • Gerda Malherbe - 2012-06-21 15:35

Well done Crime Watch! We loathe these slimeball corrupt officials and cadres

  • gee.raaf - 2012-06-21 15:39

    Really??? Corruption??? In SA??? NEVER!

  • Johan - 2012-06-21 15:40

It is not the ANC. It is the people. Some are born thieves, crimuinals, murderers and rapists. You ger them in all races. The diffrence is it the ratio between good and bad. look at our prisons, look at the newes headlines and you will see who they are. There are good and honest ones but they are in the minority.

  • Jellyarse - 2012-06-21 15:50

And another case of the the cANCerous corrupt Government officials feeding the new generation fatcats from the taxpayers money. Lock the fu**ers up! Set and example - CORRUPTION WILL OT BE TOLERATED!

  • Mark - 2012-06-21 16:21

I smell a rat. assuming that indigo designs had the infrastructure and abilities to service and comply to the prerequisites, Why was Global interface then given the tender?? Is this not a matter of who you know?? After one full year the public is now informed of what transpired. Do we really need to wait that long to find out how our tax monies are being wasted by this incapax government?? How long still before this matter goes to Court and how long thereafter will we hear of any convictions?? The sooner we can boot out the ANC the better for us all.

don't come with "there is not enough money for...." there is more than enough money for all that is needed in SA, but YOU (CORRUPT GOV EMPLOYEES AND CADRES) KEEP ON STEALING IT YOU MORONS!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am sure even the uneducated masses must be able to grasp this??!!

  • pws69 - 2012-06-22 06:52

Anyone still thinking that PRvin Gorhans assessment of R30 billion lost due to inflated tender prices and corruption per year is accurate, please raise your hands. Anyone who thinks it is closer to R100 Billion a year, please raise your hands. The ANC's Smuts Ngonyama: "I did not join the struggle to be poor". That statement alone should have warned ANC voters of what was going to happen.

  • pws69 - 2012-06-22 06:57

We hear of all of these cases of corruption, but never prosecutions. Why? More importantly, Cele was bulleted for corruption, and Gwede Mantashe states publicly that he needs to be redeployed as he is a good cadre. The ANC CELEBRATE, ADMIRE, and REWARD theft and corruption within their ranks.
