East London - Rescue efforts were under way after a man fell off a cliff in Mooiplaas in the Eastern Cape on Saturday morning, paramedics said.

The incident was reported to have occurred at around 02:00, said the provincial Emergency Medical Services.

A rescue crew, which was earlier deployed to the scene, was unable to immediately reach the patient as he was too far down the cliff.

Paramedics said a helicopter would possibly be deployed to the scene.

It was not immediately clear what had led to the man's fall.

- A previous version of this story placed the incident at Mooiplaas, Stellenbosch in the Western Cape. The incident actually occurred in Mooiplaas in the Eastern Cape, north of East London.
