2012-10-30 22:42

Johannesburg - The search for a 10-year-old girl who fell into a stormwater drain in Ivory Park was suspended on Tuesday evening, Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services said.

Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said rescue workers had been searching since 14:00 when the girl fell into an open stormwater drain.

She had been walking home from school at the time.

Mulaudzi said three other students had also fallen into the water but were rescued by their classmates.

The search was suspended at 20:00 due to a lack of light.

He said it would resume at 08:00 on Wednesday.

y the heck would u leave a Stormwater drain open or unguarded. The municipality should be heavily pinned on this.. heart-felt condolences to the family.

I agree with you on this one. My thoughts are with her family during this time. Let's hope....

This Is par for the course. Hundreds of manhole covers are missing all over the area causing major damage.

      MallyGold - 2012-10-31 08:30

Refiloe, one of the main functions of a government is to protect its citizens. Yet these fools cannot even stop the theft of drain covers. If you travel the N2 along the Keiskamma Pass towards Fish River, you will find that every single one of the hundreds of storm water drain covers has been stolen and left open for years, just waiting for an unsuspecting child to walk by.

They need to have a couple of people checking manholes every day, because they are pinched with monotonous regularity. They should also have people checking all the companies buying metal of any description. e.g. manhole covers, copper wiring etc....

  • wimpy.vanderwesthuizen - 2012-10-31 06:27

man hole covers can be found at scrap metal dealers

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-10-31 10:14

Then the dealers should be fined and fined VERY heavily for receiving stolen property

How the hell is a storm water drain unprotected-four students fell in?They need to urgently replace all covers in plastic to stop metal thieves.

      lets face it, she's dead.

      irma.white.9 - 2012-10-31 13:28

Geeze Grant, no need to be so flipping blunt about it. You don't think the family might want her body?

  • mandilakhe.buzani - 2012-10-31 09:03

Tragic as parent, a father I hope by some miracle, ths lil innocent angel afumaneke alive nd kicked, \realy\ touched!

  • irma.white.9 - 2012-10-31 09:19

Shame man. Why on earth are these drains wide open for kids to fall in? What does the government have to say?! They'll probably fix it now... too late. Condolences to the family.

      patsy.smith.125 - 2012-10-31 10:17

They're unlikely to fix anything that'll cost them money, Happyness. They don't care about whom is injured or killed, they just think about lining their pockets. They are a BAD lot.

      irma.white.9 - 2012-10-31 13:29

Patsy, so true. The only time they are prepared to spend money is if it's on their cars, homes or appetite.
