Residents attack Eskom workers

2011-07-07 10:53

Johannesburg - Dozens of villagers in Tzaneen pelted Eskom workers with stones when they tried to remove illegal electricity connections, Limpopo police said on Thursday.

Residents of a village called Ritavi attacked the Eskom workers on Wednesday, Lieutenant-Colonel Ronel Otto said.

"They also pelted Eskom security guards that were keeping a watch on the workers. Police were called in and order was restored," she said.

No arrests were made and no injuries were reported, but an Eskom vehicle was damaged.

Otto said police were monitoring the situation.

Eskom apparently decided to remove the illegal connections and provide legal connections, for which the residents would have to pay.

Otto said Eskom had not opened a criminal case, but a meeting was planned for Thursday.

Eskom spokesperson Hilary Joffe was not immediately available for comment.

Lets get this right... The ANC councillors make all sorts of bogus promises in order to be get/ remain on the GRAVY train. Then, scarcely 6 weeks after the elections, the promises are proven to be lies, and the electricity connections are still not made, and the communities do their own thing. I say deal with your lies and empty promises, or don't make them! And I say to Eskom- keep your workers away until they can be protected by SAPS. Then charge the lying politicians with incitement to violence.

      Together - 2011-07-07 11:12

If anyone ever promised these residents totally free electricity for ever and ever, they should be put on trial for fraud. In what possible world can a country provide free electricity for everyone? Even in the most socialist countries, people earn low and the state uses what they WOULD have earned to finance power. What have these residents been taught to believe? They are finding out how the world really works and how much they've been lied to. And now a new generation are falling for even bigger untruths - apparently owning a piece of sand makes you very very rich?

      Grant - 2011-07-07 11:14

You left out the part about the proven lies meaning nothing come next election, when the same lies will be regurgitated, and the same people will vote in the same party...

@sheep - Get real! In this world nothing is for nothing, look around you, open your eyes and SEE! Nationalize as you want to do and you will starve for free.

      daaivarksetier - 2011-07-07 11:26

This is wrong it is not ESKOM workers that is guilty, 8 years ago ESKOM held a meeting with Government and told them that they are busy running out of power and the demand is getting to hight. They asked for funds to build seven new power Stations that would meet the power demand. And Government refused to give funds for this and did not listen to what Eskom said back then. And now this is getting out of hand and power goes out all the time, it is not ESKOM, the problem lies with the government and the people in charge of this country.

      daaivarksetier - 2011-07-07 11:29

Blame this power shortages on the ANC whom said no to ESKOM for funds to build new Power Stations 7 of them to be exact!

@Grant - All the ANC does is go to the townships near election time, dish out free t-shirts and food hampers and these sheeple will vote for them in droves. In essence they are voting for a free gift once every 5 years.

      mamakalami - 2011-07-07 12:17

saabnut - The ANC has never made promises for free electricity. If anyone has been on a gravy train - it's these idiots from Ritavi stealing electricity. I am happy that Eskom has decided to take them head on. Nothing is free.

      Brad - 2011-07-07 13:06

I personally believe that the 2011 elections have secured a major shift in our country's political structure. There is only "so" much that the ruling party can promise - both on a national and local level. The unfulfilled promises have started to reach a stage of satiety, and eventually the votes will sway in favour of parties that really CAN deliver, or who can at least show genuine support without turning a blind eye. It's a severe warning to the ruling party to "never cry wolf". If you keep making promises without delivery (or adequate management of such delivery), very few people will believe you. The next national elections will see some major changes, believe you me! The injustices of the past can be used as an excuse for only so long. Don’t for one minute think that Whites, Indians and Coloureds feel threatened by the land grab or that they will just be willing to “hand everything over”! They have also helped build this country and some of them are the fifth or sixth generation here. If any race can command claim to land in SA, it would be the Khoi and San, who were here first! "Sheep" - most people in this country (of ALL races) work hard for what they have. If you believe that you are entitled to “FREE, FREE, FREE”, perhaps you need to think again, or read more of those fairytales which seem to be influencing your way of thinking. NO country hands their people things for free (give and take a few Government benefits), REGARDLESS OF THE INJUSTICES OF THE PAST.

      Snoopy88 - 2011-07-07 14:20

This government needs to toughen up and not be bullied by rampaging hooligans. You can't just have more and more illegal (and dangerous) connections to the grid and then just keep charging the paying customers more to make up for those who are connecting illegally. No illegal connections should be tolerated. Then introduce a system whereby those who really cannot afford electricity get free quota for their basic needs. But that would involve being organised. This is what a government is suppose to concentrate on doing. Not stick its greedy little fingers in private enterprise.

      michaelx - 2011-07-07 16:31

VOTE, VOTE FOR THE ANC,AND YOU WILL LIVE IN POVITEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.......

      Zebedi - 2011-07-07 20:19

My solution to this would be to cut off all power to the Ritavi community alltogether, and promise to only switch it on again when the community has sorted out the people who have illegal connections. When someone steals from someone else in the community, there is normally a swift retribution in the form of a beating or necklacing. Why should stealing power from the people be any different?

      Kenko - 2011-07-08 10:02

@Brad & all who say the DA will do better: How can ANY party promise all these services for free? It is just not possible to have free everything. Unfortunately, the ANC has reared it's brainless supporters that it is possible, and the only obstacle is the opposition. You wouldn't want to be in the DA's shoes once they win, because the only way they will win is by promising the same. The electorate in this country believe that sheer numbers guarantee the most power, even when they and their offspring cannot survive economically. This is a losing battle.

  • DAB - 2011-07-07 11:00

Only in South Africa! We demand, we demand everything for free. "It's my right" WTF?

      Together - 2011-07-07 11:15

People may be very surprised to discover that you can't put sand or gold into an electrity grid. And do they imagine that the Chinese are going to ship over planeloads of money just for the joy of seeing the residents of Ritavi rich and electrified? Who has taught a generation that you don't have to pay for anything - with money, work or time?

      Shadoz - 2011-07-07 11:15

So, the law abiding citizen is left to foot the bill yet again - enough is enough. Part of the reason why out electricity bills are so high is because of so many illegal connections. If these illegal connections persist we will end up like Lagos....

Let's say Malema has 3 million followers and the land redistribution act passes. Is each of them going to get a farm, or a piece of a farm. How are they going to choose who get which farm? Empty promises... go figure... the bread and butter of the ANC. Guess you get what you vote for.

Do you really believe that the is a democratic solution to the problems? As much as I hate violence and hoped that a systemic solution would be possible; I only have the following statement! Arm yourselves. Arm yourselves wisely. This is only one more example of what black South-Africa wants and rocks is just an available weapon. Just think if one of these "protesters" had an AK-47. The headlines would have read slightly differently. The problem is that their access to an AK-47 is only R150.00 away. It will almost cost you more to purchase a slingshot. They would also not have to wait in excess of 3 years to be licensed. I submit a vote of no confidence in the current government, administrative, legislative and executive. I extend that to all corporate bodies servicing or in corrupt relationships buying them at present. This comment is not isolated to this particular incident; but to the trend it is a symptom of. White South Africa (a PC misnomer; but a reality) has no where to turn; but to itself. Arm yourselves to prevent your demise. As for the people of other ethnicity who realize the brutality caused by the self-enriching policies of a gangster government, welcome to the cause; you have just found the victims who had been demonized as monsters. We might not have treated you fairly; but we used to keep the wolf at bay.

  • Justin - 2011-07-07 11:32

Well, it's about freakin time that these idiots start doing this. Everybody that pays for the electricity, and taxes have to put up with power cuts, and load shedding whilst these people expect to get it for free. The extra revenue created by getting at least small sums of money from EVERYBODY using electricity might actually keep people that pays every month with uninterrupted service. In essence we are all paying for these people to have electricity, and that is just completely unjustifiable.

  • lollie sue - 2011-07-07 11:32

it is standard practice in SA that people steal with illegal electricity connections and resell, if the electricity pole is in front of your house it is yours and you can use the opportunity to make a few bucks. screw the rest of the people and companies, it is time people stop complaining. when in rome, do as romans do, when in SA do as the majority of SA people.

      Felix - 2011-07-07 12:07

Just so you know, the electricity isn't produced by the pole. If everyone refuses to pay then we won't be having this disscussion. I would be out looking for firewood (after burning the pole of course) cause it's Fing cold.

  • DW - 2011-07-07 11:40

The ANC promises them everything for free to get their votes. They have also taught them (over many years) that if you dont get your own way, to riot, strike and be violent. You cannot teach someone how to make a country ungovernable and then expect them to toe the line and follow the rules when you are in power and also not delivering. The chickens are coming home to roost.

      Kenno - 2011-07-07 14:38

With all due respect, this forum, for most of April and May of this year was WARNING the morons out there to be very cautious with your vote, and reminded them that you get what you voted for. Well ENJOY WHAT YOU VOTED FOR and dont expect sympathy when your illegal power supply is switched off. It is called stealing. Now deal with it!

  • Anonymous Thinker - 2011-07-07 11:48

If Eskom wasn't paying their exec R5.7 million salary per year along with all the other million Rand salaries maybe electricity could come down in price. If there are so many people out there not paying for electricity, soon the people that do pay are going to start having serious issues about paying theirs. Why should I pay electric for myself AND for those who aren't? And I want to see that exec's salary. I want to know what qualifies a person to receive R475 000 per month salary!

      mugu.eater - 2011-07-07 12:32

R5.7m is actually one of the lowest salary paid. Most CEO's in RSA eran about R20m. I think all ecec's are overpaid

      Enuff - 2011-07-07 14:48

I agree that Eskom Execs' salaries are way too high given their profitability has been so dismal and they are "forced" to charge us an arm and a leg. But that is not the issue here. The issue is people believing its their right to steal electricity. Did the ANC promise FREE electricity? I don't believe they did (not an ANC supporter). I believe they promised access to electricity. The ANC supporters who the ANC have failed to educate have interpreted this "access to electricity" to mean "free electricity".

  • Civil_Rights - 2011-07-07 12:01

@ Anonymous Thinker - You are ignorant, do you know what the Bank exec's (mainly white) earn a year , I mean ABSA, FNB etc. More than the ESKOM exec's, where do you think they get the money from? Bank charges, interest rate they charge both rich and poor pay the same charges. The compensations of SOE Exec's is far much lower than those in the private sector. Electricity in SA is already cheap by the way. The problem we have in SA is the welfare mentality that started with free housing.

But Firsrand has a level 3 BEE rating, which im afraid cant be gotten with all whites in top posts. Vital statistics: • Total number of staff employed (full-time): 26925 • Annual turnover in Rands for 2009 (RSA only): R24075million • Industry sector: Banking and financial services • Black employees: 71,29% • Previously disadvantaged individuals in management: 84,04% • Women employees: 64,54% • Women executive (senior) management: 31,61% • Employee Assistance Programmes: While FNB offers a full range of EAPs, one of the most significant is that of ebt-management counselling administered by Life Assist. A wellness programme is available 24 hours a day. Headoffice staff also have access to medical professionals– including psychologists, doctors and podiatrists at one of two onsite clinics.

The Police needs to go with Eskom and remove all illegal connections, We land up paying for these, that is theft. This is happening all over all the townships. Good Eskom, keep this up.

      Leon Groenewald - 2011-07-07 14:08

Go eskom? I know a nuclear physicist that might disagree. ESKOM is in league with the current government. Please call a shut down on all our nuclear power plants. You have driven on our roads. Heve you seen how they declined? Please pour a huge amount of cement over Koeberg, SAFRI1 and Pelendaba. A pothole there would kill us all. Let's just please do whatever we can to get a government we can trust to administer even the entitlement issue before we think about how much stealing electricity hurts our pockets. This whole incident is a storm in a teacup; yet according to legend; reading the leaves will guide our future!

  • NATO OFFICE - 2011-07-07 15:00

I pay more than R1000 for electricity every month..and someone wants it for free...nothing for free in Africa morons

  • Kamogelo - 2011-07-07 16:27

ANC working together we can do more!

  • TheUgly - 2011-07-07 16:38

Hoekom moet jy 'n ANC ondersteuner uitlos as hy sit? Want as hy staan dan steel hy en as hy le^ dan teel hy ;-)

  • PAnzi_ne_ANC - 2011-07-07 17:12

maybe if they kick enough excom ass then maybe escomj wil get its act together andstop styealing our mney and supply a n electricity system which workls most of the time..

      mamakalami - 2011-07-07 20:31

Stupidity reigns in your world. Most of the people who blog on this site have an education so please do not insult our intelligence. Not sure why you would want to incite negativity with your blog. Sicko.

  • Delta Roger - 2011-07-07 19:13

Electricity staff being assaulted while removing illegal connections is common, not applicable to ESKOM only. The Councillors encourage illegal connections,so that they can get voted in. We cannot arrest people for stealing electricity because we do nothing to nail the THIEVES THAT ARE RUNNING THE COUNTRY (travelgate thugs, arms deal thugs and the list goes on at national, provincial and local government levels).

  • v3 - 2011-07-07 19:18

Eskom is condoning this unlawful violence against its own workers by not laying charges - "silence is consent"

  • Goddok - 2011-07-07 20:48

Broken promises! Broken Promises! The revolution has begun!

  • Peter - 2011-07-08 07:08

Why are police sorting out order here, Send the politicians who caused this to sort it out, why is my taxes being wasted, leave the police to fight serious crime, let government reap what they have sown!

      Peter - 2011-07-08 07:12

I really feel for these people, they have been lied to for so long without results, its winter and everyone is trying to keep warm, i live in a brick house and we freeze during the winter, imagine a shack, imagine looking at your little ones, what would you do? Politicians should be sorting it out as they promised! Sad!

History always repeats itself, no? REPUBLIC - DEMOCRACY - SOCIALISM - ANARCHY - OLIGARCHY.

  • Other Justin - 2011-07-08 13:02

I have no more sympathy, if you voted for the cANCer, congratulations, reap the whirlwind.

  • Pragmatist - 2011-07-08 13:07

SO now that they have to pay like the rest of us, they don't like it! Why should I sponsor their criminality? Rather SELL their power to Zim and reduce my monthly bill!
