Residents fume over closed licensing dept

2012-12-07 12:20

Johannesburg - Angry Randburg residents did not feel much Christmas cheer on Friday morning when they discovered the Randburg Licensing Department was closed for its year-end function.

"This is bullshit," Nicholas Ditshego fumed.

A notice on the door read: "Motor vehicle licensing will be closed at 10:00 on Friday December 7, due to a year end function..."

Neville Pritchard, who went to renew his car licence disc, said he was turned away on Thursday and told to return on Friday.

"No one told me it would be closed," he said.

Dozens of people were turned away by three security guards from as early as 09:30.

People complained that no previous notifications were put up prior to the closure, and that the notification was only put up around 09:45 on Friday morning.

One woman was reduced to tears. Ruth Thomas, who wanted to renew her vehicle licence, had an argument with the security guards and said she was there on Thursday afternoon and was told to return on Friday because they were on their lunch break between 11:00 and 14:00.

Annette Smith complained that she was certain it was unlawful to close the department for a end-year function.

No one from the licensing department was available to comment.

Post Office - Took me 10 minutes !!!

  • crracker.crackerr - 2012-12-07 12:34

The whole management should be fired. Those who suffered losses should made an effort to make contact with each other and combinedly sue those responsible for the decision to close for losses.

      crracker.crackerr - 2012-12-07 12:35

And for suffering. Let the law be developed to effectively deal with the disdain shown by those in power for the rest of us.

  • sanet.odendaal.9 - 2012-12-07 12:35

Why couldn't they have a party after hours like most companies!!!!! 2 f#*@! Lazy 2 work!

      rodney.louis.7 - 2012-12-07 15:16

Well lets be honest people working at a office with high volumes off customers coming in ,are re due a break once a year .They should have advertized the plan better though

  • attie.mostert.9 - 2012-12-07 12:35

Whats new, arnt they "closed" even if they are open?

  • melanie.gardner.7528 - 2012-12-07 12:36

this is the level of service in our country. its appalling everywhere! does no one have pride in themselves and the jobs they do anymore? its just plain and simple sickening.

  • danie.smit.587 - 2012-12-07 12:42

And we will again place the same politicians in power, so that we can moan after 2014. You vote for them you live with your results

      JAbu.R15 - 2012-12-07 13:24

I fail to see how all this have to do with polotitians, you have got issues and you are addressing them at the wrong platform! it was not politicians having a year end funtion. i dont work for the government but we did close for a year end function.

      zapadela.tistarocha - 2012-12-07 13:31

Just another incident to validate a Governmental whinging session.....Tis your right after all.

      allan.bezuidenhout.75 - 2012-12-07 13:43

@ Jabu .... Ummmm, the government does not exactly acy against these individuals who just sit and collect withjou making an effort to provide the services thatthey are paid with our tax money to do ..... viva ANsleep

      jacques.d.plessis.75 - 2012-12-07 13:47

@zapadela. I assume you would be ok with them closing on the day you have to renew your license and receive a fine from the JMPD when they pull you over for an expired license?

      zapadela.tistarocha - 2012-12-07 14:02

Jac, I am way too on to it to ever be fined due to procrastination or breaking any Law. Every office has a year end party......Give it a break m8.

      daniel.malan3 - 2012-12-07 14:27

@Zapadela, you seem deluded. A government service, for which the people of this country pays, can't decide to be closed during working hours. They are only open until 15:00 in most places, so why can't they have it in the 9 hours left in the day? Get real

      byron.matthews.562 - 2012-12-07 14:32

as far as I know, you have 30 days after the expiration date within which to renew.

      freddie.miff - 2012-12-07 16:18

Jabu, these are all deployed cadres. Had they been appointed on merit your comments would be applicable. Politics has infiltrated all spheres of the public sector.

      michael.kleber.376 - 2012-12-07 16:24

Jabu by law you have to have a licence for your car , so you take a days leave to go and get it and guess what its closed for a party , a pvt company is closed for a party then you go to the next company and the 1st company loses a client ,

  • teresa.c.gomes.3 - 2012-12-07 12:44

  • JAbu.R15 - 2012-12-07 13:21

Some people are crazy, y not renew ur license at the post office? i mean if the station is closed for the year end function it is closed, they also must have a year end function like the rest of us. this has nothing to do with batho pele. as much as at your work you close and go on lunch or year end function they also had that right as well.

      arthur.salvado - 2012-12-07 13:35

JAbu, they doing it with my money and tax payers money. They are public SERVANTS and are there to work for us tax payers. It is NOT the other way round. For all I care, they must celebrate after hours.

      JAbu.R15 - 2012-12-07 13:43

ur are being unfare. the people open the lisencing centre the whole year, just one day people complain. yes thay are using the tax payers money, dont know if you know there is a thing called entertainment budget, from the office of the president down. ther is no company that does not have such a budget, so they are using their budget, that is the way the empoloyer says thank you for working the whole year. doing it after hours will never work because some people dont have transpont and the reason it is done during office hours is to accommodate all staff members.,

      daniel.malan3 - 2012-12-07 14:33

They don't have transport you say, then how did they get to the party during hours mmm? You have any idea how short their hours are? All staff can be accommodated after hours. I don't think it is your right to have a year end function either, it's a kind gesture.

      ange.kritzinger - 2012-12-07 15:14

You are technically right Jabu. The people at the department may have their party. I think most people here (when they read this article) immediately thought of their own experience at departments like these. The frustration builds up, hence the commenting. I remembered one in Pretoria where the people at the counter leave every 45 minutes for a 15 minute tea break!!!!... and the people in the line have to sit and watch them. If they needed tea that badly, couldn't they all just keep their cups under the counter and have a sip between customers?? Regarding the article, why didn't they warn people beforehand that the department would be closed? Why don't they make alternative transport arrangements for those without cars and have a nice long party over the weekend?

      ronel.vanrenenlouw - 2012-12-07 16:51

Just one correction here JAbu.R15 - yes you can renew your vehicle license at the post office, NOT your driver's license. Unfortunately, for that, you do have to go to the licensing station. HUGE difference.

  • zapadela.tistarocha - 2012-12-07 13:30

  • angelanair3 - 2012-12-07 15:05

Our useless Labour Department must really look at "Fair wage for a fair days work". I passed through Germany - they built their economy through hard work! After the war, industries were built by the state to employ people. These people worked shifts so everyone could take home a salary to feed their families! Not so in South Africa - greed and laziness is the order of the day - fine, Cosatu is fighting a good fight on the e-toll saga - but what are they really doing to build our economy. The Licence department is a case in point. Fire the idiots for deserting their posts and then you have the trade unions backing the idiots! Better not complain too much - or next year they will declare their closing day a Holiday! They probably need a day to get drunk, so they can spend the weekend getting sober to face us idiots that help pay their public servant salary - Public servant ha ha ha - what a joke!

      zapadela.tistarocha - 2012-12-07 15:30

Nair Nair, Unlike Germany who received funds from the World bank at the time to regenerate their Industries, Here in RSA we had massive movement of funds out of the country just before 1994. You are comparing two completely different scenarios and facts. Stop deluding yourself into this CoCoNuT lifestyle. Open your eyes and really see the good changes that have occurred or do your CoCoNuT eyes just see the failings like a Detractors on this site ??

Methinks we have a heckler in our midst - zepadela. You dont know me - I wont take offence at the "coconut' label. I have earned my place in society - and the World bank was not formed just after the 2nd world war. And it is people like you that caused money to be moved out of the country - and being born in Johannesburg I dont need to be told to open my eyes - I dont know you -you are a non entity - and I will in future ignore your futile attempts to insult people. You now have the platform to hurl your stupid insults - so go ahead - all you are doing is making a fool out of yourself - so carry on being the fool.

      zapadela.tistarocha - 2012-12-07 16:31

I know people like you, Indians whom have now become something other than Blacks. My own parents share this mentality hence they no longer are involved in my Family's life. They ain't gonna corrupt my kids. World bank, Allied forces funds whatever it may be the funds were given to Germany...Point made. Funds were removed cos the World power's do not have faith in Africa as a whole, We are a resource and will forever remain that way hence BRICS was formed to change the way the World operates. Seems you were just a tourist when you traveled the World, after 13 years away from RSA I have become worldly wise even though I am half your age.

The odd break is therefore made official just to show that they are there and busy. Cannot understand why you all tolerate this incompetency ....if you don't like it do something and move on. Complaining wont help as it is only going to get worse.

  • gemmaleigh.evans.3 - 2012-12-08 06:17

Ok, I get everyone's frustration and bitterness, but I do think some of you are being just a tad excessive. Yes it was a huge inconvenience for those who were turned away. I agree that there are grounds to be upset if you were turned away on Thursday without being told of Fridays year end function. However, for the most part I feel, the commentators on here are lacking objectivity and confusing this isolated incident with their reputed bad service. It could have been advertised or handled better, but really fair. Nearly every company has a year end function and a good majority of those take place on a work day (in most cases the last working day). My company will close at 12:00 next Friday for ours, granted all our clients will have been informed by then, but the general public who have not communicated with us by then will unfortunately not know. At the end of the day you can't please everyone, but please let's not behave like hypocrites. If you want to complain about their shoddy service in general, by all means I'll agree with you, but one year end function? Really now people. They're not a hospital, fire station or police department. Let's be practical and fair. You'd swear someone had died the way some of you carry on.
