Johannesburg - Three men have been arrested for robbery after a shoot-out with a police officer in KwaMhlanga on Tuesday, Mpumalanga police said.

A Bangladeshi businessman had just opened his shop on Monday when the robbers struck, Lieutenant Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

"They took prepaid airtime vouchers and an undisclosed amount of cash at gun-point before running away."

An off-duty police officer driving past the scene got out of his car and chased the robbers. "The robbers fired shots at the officer. He returned fire and a shoot-out ensued," Hlathi said.

A group of residents helped chase the robbers and caught them.

No one was wounded in the shooting

Police recovered some of the stolen vouchers from the men, Hlathi said.

They were expected to face charges of attempted murder and business robbery in the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court on later on Tuesday.

Good for the cop and the members of the public who helped, this is what we need here. We need to stand together and get rid of the scumbags that cause all the trouble in the country !!!

crooks often dispose of the cash/evidence as they flee to avoid successful prosecution. Happens all the time
