Mecklenburg - Residents of Mecklenburg went on a rampage and torched two taverns and a liquor warehouse on Thursday, Limpopo police said.

The three properties were torched on Thursday night and in the early hours of Friday morning, said Colonel Ronel Otto.

"The community is accusing the [tavern owner] of the murder of a young woman [who was killed] approximately two weeks ago," said Otto.

The victim was 24-year-old Carol Motene.

"Her body was found in front of her house with a bullet wound [to] the forehead. Her lips, nose and private parts were cut off, and was found next to the body."

Initially, the woman's ex-boyfriend was arrested for her murder. He was later released due to a lack of evidence.

It was not immediately clear how, and if, the slain woman was linked to the tavern owner.

Meanwhile, 25 residents have been arrested for the attack on the businessman's property.

They have been charged with public violence, malicious damage to property and arson and were expected to appear in court soon.

Otto said no one was injured in the fires.
