Residents snub campaign against illegal dog hunting

AN awareness day meant to educate people about illegal hunts with dogs in New Hanover yesterday turned into a “damp squib” with the community members shunning the event.

The campaign, organised by the Dukathole group, an environmental awareness organisation based in New Hanover, had to be cancelled because besides the invited guest, no one else attended.

The few young people who arrived, with their dogs in tow, thought they were there to vaccinate their dogs against rabies.

They left immediately when they learnt this was not the case.

“The community needs to know that they cannot just hunt with dogs. They need a permit and permission from the land owner to hunt,” said Andile Vilakazi of Dukathole.

He said since December last year, there have been a number of attempts of illegal hunts with dogs on a farm they run to the extent they have had to put a fence around the property.

“We have a wetland on the farm and there are buck who live there. We have noticed poachers in the area and we have had to fence the farm to keep them out,” he said.

Illegal dog hunting has in the past raised the ire of many landowners, some of whom have been intimidated by the hunters, and infuriated when rare and protected species like Oribi are killed during hunts
