Johannesburg - Three robbers allegedly shot dead the owner of two Johannesburg restaurants on Saturday as she was travelling home from a festival where she had been working, Netwerk24 reported on Tuesday.

Celia Da Costa, owner of Rodizio restaurants in Bedfordview and Fourways in Johannesburg, was on her way to her Norwood home on Saturday night after manning stalls at the Lusito Land Festival in La Rochelle with three of her employees.

The 49-year-old was on the M2 with her three employees when the incident happened, with the money she had earned from the festival in the boot of her Mercedes-Benz.

A friend of Da Costa’s, Sandy Correia, said that three men had been harassing Celia throughout the night.

According to Da Costa’s employees, the three men then allegedly pursued Da Costa in cars after she and her employees left the festival together in the same car, said Correia.

One car allegedly overtook Da Costa’s car and boxed her in, while a second car tried to push her off the road. The third car crashed into her from behind.

A man with an AK-47 then opened fire and hit Da Costa several times.

The robbers struggled to open the boot of the car with a crowbar after it was damaged in the accident.

They shouted at the employees to help them, but soon fled after other vehicles started appearing on the scene.

Correia, a close friend, had been informed of the incident once she got home.

Her friend died for nothing, she said.

The police could not be reached for comment, Netwerk24 reported.
