Rhino calf survives poaching attempt

2011-12-08 14:07

Johannesburg - Two rhino have been shot dead and a third one wounded in two separate poaching incidents in Limpopo, police said on Thursday.

"A rhino cow and her calf were shot at Hoedspruit and a black rhino bull was killed and dehorned at Musina," said Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto in a statement.

She said the rhino cow and calf were shot at a private game farm near Hoedspruit in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The rhino cow was found dead with her horn removed, while her calf survived the shooting.

In another incident on a private game farm in Musina, the carcass of a black rhino bull was discovered late on Wednesday night. The rhino's horn had been removed. The black rhino bull had already been dead for a few days before its body was discovered.

Earlier this week, SA National Parks said a total of 405 rhinos had been poached this year, an increase of 21.6% from last year.

Poaching was found to be most problematic in the Kruger National Park and the Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

On Wednesday, the Kruger National Park said in a bid to curb poaching, it would no longer reveal information about its rhino.

Spokesperson Laura Mukwevho said that it would stop posting information on maps and noticeboards about where rhino had been spotted.

Man, i wish a solution to this problem could be found asap. I still think the source of the "orders" for rhino horn should be cracked down on !!!!

      rynhardt.ferreira - 2011-12-08 14:34

There is one. Make Ivory worthless!!!!! Damn bastards!!!

      Jack - 2011-12-08 14:48

Fuking would they like it if we started to killing their pandas!! Yes guys have you heard, Panda paw cures aids!!

      Rainbow - 2011-12-08 15:14

The only solution is to dehorn the animals. They began a progect like this a while back and then it stopped, If the horns are removed there will be nothing to steal. Why they delay!

  • methedex - 2011-12-08 14:25

Rhino you must fight back! use horn! Strike up their backsides! Rhino 1 - Poacher 0...

  • Freddy - 2011-12-08 14:30

  • Mashudu - 2011-12-08 14:55

This is getting way out of Hand. Government pls do something to protect our Rhinos.

      leoa.martins - 2011-12-08 17:56

They are so corrupt heaven knows if they have their finger or should I say HAND in the rhino horn pie. Maybe this explains why nothing constructive is actually being done.

  • Shirley - 2011-12-08 15:05

Is there ANYBODY out there who is going to take this seriously and start getting serious about poaching!!!!???? The species will be extinct soon! Give 30 year without parole sentences. We have the COP17 here but thats a bit pointless if we cannot even stop the senseless slaughtering of animals in our own back yard!At this rate my great grand children will see pictures of rhino as we do of the dinosaur!!!!!

  • Adhir - 2011-12-08 15:08

id like to meet one of these poachers, as well as their buyers... and cut off their noses without an anaesthetic... and leave them there to bleed out... oh wait it should be in the same scenario as the rhinos, so in a nature park of some sort..just to make sure the lions smell the blood and fear.. then they will know how it feels... this december im giving my salary to the cause - lets try and save these beautiful creatures...

      Ibhubesi - 2011-12-08 15:42

I agree Adhir. Wish we could inject the Rhino horns with a poison that make their genitals rot off!!!!! To think our Rhino has to pay the price for a stupid superstition from the East. I can cry of anger and frustration about this issue!

      wendy.warwick3 - 2011-12-08 15:53

Ibhubesi, there are people who do inject their rhino horn.

      Irene - 2011-12-08 16:07

There's a documentary being shown on e-tv at the moment about rhino poaching. There are people busy injecting the horns with poison but the really scary part is that the 'victims' of the poison can sue the owners of the rhino!! I kid you not, words taken right out of the mouth of the parks representative.

      Ibhubesi - 2011-12-08 16:27

@ Wendy. I am pleased to hear that. @Irene. Let them sue us Sister. They will end up with our brilliant judicial system where nobody is ever guilty of any wrong doing! LET THEM SUE!

      Irene - 2011-12-08 16:54

Ibhubesi ~ I fully agree. When this came out of the parks rep's mouth I was gobsmacked! Really interesting programme though - Channel 403 on DStv

      Ivan - 2011-12-08 19:22

The injecting of the horns should be a mandated government policy so that anybody who dies or gets sick will have to sue the government. They can't do that anyway because they wuold have to admit to eating the horn which is an offence thanks to CITES. After the first 100 dead asians we should no longer have a poaching problem. PS this would take care of the dagger handle trade as well if the toxin was absorbable through the skin.

      alida.dutoit1 - 2011-12-08 20:16

I commend you for giving your salary. The anti poaching units need it so badly. But, the ones to get are the kingpins - the buyers that encourage the poachers.

  • Lida - 2011-12-08 15:37

How sickening. No respect for nature. And we want to do business with China. What a laugh

  • cosmos.ndebele - 2011-12-08 15:46

Asians in pursuit of Big Rambos, they kill our Rhinos, its a disgrace. Very soon they will start hunting blackman for their legendary Rambos.

  • wendy.warwick3 - 2011-12-08 15:46

Interesting comments, first ivory has nothing to do with Rhino - its called keratin, the same as your hair and nails, second there are some fantastic organisations who are doing their uttmost best to protect the few remaining rhino, check them out, Palala Rhino Sanctuary and Sanwild Life who could do with all the help they can get. Last dehorning a rhino will not work, these barbaric killers will kill just to get that remaining little bit, some have even resorted to hiring armed guards to protect each rhino they have. The SANDF have been doing a fantastic job in KNP.

      Shirley - 2011-12-08 16:46

Good to hear! Now we need some hard ball legislation on those caught and better customs at airports and ports.

  • Coral - 2011-12-08 16:08

    Poison the damn horns!!!!

  • Maurits - 2011-12-08 20:01

Chinese bast*rds will kill every last animal on this planet if they carry on having their way!!

      SafariJules - 2011-12-09 08:37

Asian bribery money is clearing Africa of its animals. This bodes poorly for the entire world, because they will surely suck the world dry of animals for the taste of flesh and childish potions!

  • Graeme - 2011-12-09 08:34

The only way that Rhino horn can be used as an aphrodisiac is to strap it on and shova shova......... Ne' my china!

  • Jeanine - 2011-12-09 08:36

Thank God he is still alive!!! The poor baby! Wish I could de-horn the poachers!!

  • susan.ettmayr - 2011-12-09 09:25

The rhino calf had to be put down. Government wake up. Shoot the poachers!

  • Franklyn - 2011-12-14 21:20

poison these horns whiles they are still on the rhino, anyone that consumes the rhino horn powder will be poisoned, that should get people to think twice.....must be some way of doing this without affecting the animal ?

  • Gail - 2012-02-20 12:05

I think that poaching is atrocious. Cleary these people have no conscious. They should be fined heavly and put in prison for life.Have they no regard for poor defenseless animals. Shame on them Regards Gail Shorkend
