Rhino calf’s sight restored

Johannesburg - An orphaned rhino calf's sight has been restored after surgery to remove cataracts, Beeld newspaper reported on Monday.

The calf was blinded when it was hit on the head by poachers.

Yvonne Gioa, owner of the Elandela private game reserve outside Hoedspruit in Mpumalanga, told the newspaper the operation was a miracle.

Roccy, the rhino calf, was taken to the Onderstepoort veterinary research institute on the back of a truck on January 3.

Dr Anthony Goodhead removed two cataracts that had developed on the calf's retinas.

During a follow-up consultation in Hoedspruit this week, Goodhead found that the operation had been a success, and said he was very happy with Roccy's progress.

This is bittersweet because the operation should not ever have been necessary. I hope that these poachers get taken out on their next attempt.

this is definitely my aaawh for the day. I hope and pray the poachers die a very painful death. Karma is GOOD, so dear poacher when you are laying in a ditch somewhere with broken bones or a gunshot to the head , I will be praying hard for suffering to be a whole lot more.

Wonderful, a happy Rhino story at last - although very sad that the calf was orphaned by poachers - scourge of the earth!

Just a correction on one fact in that article. It wasn't done at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Research Institute! It was done at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Pretoria, which is situated on the Onderstepoort Campus. A very big difference between the two.

Another question: Cataracts are per definition a reduction in the clarity of the intraocular LENSES, I am now very confused as to how cataracts were removed off the RETINAS of this animal. Please can someone shed some light, is this just horribly incorrect reporting?
