Rhino suspects could walk free

Johannesburg - A Chinese man and Vietnamese man charged with involvement in rhino poaching could walk out of the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court as free men on Friday, if a court translator fails to appear, Beeld newspaper reported.

District Magistrate Eric Mhlari on Thursday postponed the case against the two until Friday, and warned that in the absence of a translator, he would remove the case from the court roll.

Vietnamese citizen Qifen Chen and Jigua Han, from China, appeared in court for the first time on February 21, according to Beeld.

Chen was then admitted to hospital with an ankle injury and the case was postponed until February 29, but he was unable to attend the court case as he was still in hospital.

Court translator Melody Lin was not available for either of the two court appearances, so the case was postponed until March 7, but Lin did not arrive.

She sent a message to notify the magistrate that she could only translate Chinese, not Vietnamese.

Meanwhile, Chen informed the court that he in fact could speak fluent Chinese, so the case was postponed until March 15.

On Thursday, Lin again failed to arrive, after informing the court that she had a stomach ailment.
She assured the court that she would definitely attend the case on Friday.

China is in control... What a sad, tail-between-their-legs government we have. Losers. Eish.

Me thinks the translater should be charged along these idiots

  • Teboho Mphaloane - 2012-03-16 11:40

Wait, you can't prosecute someone if there's no interpreter for them? Guess I know what I'll say if I ever end up in court: ''ummm, !xa xxu slqri mrxrsti jv!xlst. Schfrqi lalala mztfrr. Gwlryq drr'' (translation) ''ummm, my bilingual grandma and I were the last 2 speakers of our language. She never taught me English because she always translated for me. She died yesterday.''

Could you teach me to speak this language? Sounds like a useful skill... ;)

I want to start a "Shoot Poachers & dealers in poached goods on sight" effort, any hunters out there want to sign up?

  • gillian.sanderson - 2012-03-16 12:20

WTF! Why must it be a court translator and not just a translator? Come on guys, get someone who can talk English/Chinese and make sure these b*s*a*ds dont walk free!

  • valcooperRSA - 2012-03-16 12:32

Who let them in here in the 1st it possible that a payoff and a threat is in place here

  • valcooperRSA - 2012-03-16 12:36

It has been said.......South Africa will become the next China

  • Antipoaching - 2012-03-16 12:44

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These bloody poachers, buyers & dealers should be shot on sight! To hell with the rule of law! We have 2 rhino in the Eastern Cape going through indescribable suffering after they were illegally and brutally dehorned on 02 March and these filthy free-loaders could walk??????????? This link will illustrate why I have abandoned my belief in human rights for poachers and the kind:

  • Charl - 2012-03-16 12:55

maybe i should learn a language no one speaks in south africa, then i cant go to jail if i commit a crime.

  • Tommy - 2012-03-16 12:58

These chinks can learn English in about 2 minutes. Tell them that they get death penalty and that the cost of their execution has to be paid by their families in Asia. And just like that, they will understand English very well!

  • Nasheetha - 2012-03-16 13:46

sounds to me like somebody here is being paid to be away from court!

  • Louise - 2012-03-16 14:17

Maybe Melody Lin is taking a cut of the profit?

  • chantal.richardson2 - 2012-03-16 14:22

Mob Justice anyone - it's our country and our animals, why should we allow our legal system to make a mockery out of what we clearly know is right and wrong!

      Antipoaching - 2012-03-16 14:32

maybe tie the SOB's down and let a herd of rhino run over them? That appeals to my sense of humour round about now

  • Tony - 2012-03-17 12:46

Pathetic. Our justice system is pathetic. May be it is something more sinister like bribery and corruption. The law in this country is to protect the guilty and the rich. What chance do our Rhinos have!!!

  • Jack - 2012-03-20 10:16

WTH!!! Then try the little gooks in English and make them find their own translators...

  • Andre - 2012-03-20 16:36

I will fetch and deliver her. Give me her address. One way or another she will make it.
