Cape Town - A Gumtree user has taken the time to explore the lighter side of the Rhodes Must Fall debate, taking to the e-commerce website to punt a rather familiar-looking statue.

“Genuine piece of South African history for your own garden! (Previous owner is trying to erase the past),” reads the opening line of Gumtree user Safferland’s ad.

“Statue comes with a free international scholarship which can change your future! Great conversation starter for your next braai.”

Priced at R1 500, the monument is sure to attract a lot of bids at such a steal (if it can be moved, of course).

Turns out, Safferland is a satirical comedy group that dedicates itself to producing "comedy inspired by life in South Africa", a member told News24 on Thursday.

“Rejoice in the humorous condition of being a Safferlander, whether you’re living in SA or abroad, because to laugh at ourselves is to see us for whom we really are,” the group said on its Facebook page.

"In LOL we trust," the group signs off.

The ad has since been taken down by Gumtree, ending a rather short-lived run on Thursday, but can be seen here.

On Wednesday evening, a sitting of the University of Cape Town’s special council voted unanimously in favour of removing the real Rhodes statue from its current location on UCT's upper campus.

The monument is due to be removed from the campus at 17:00 on Thursday.
