Johannesburg - A man accused of committing a ritual murder by mutilating his girlfriend is expected to appear in the Makhado Magistrate's Court next week, Limpopo police said.

The 38-year-old man, a security guard in Makhado, was arrested on Friday and made his first appearance in the Makhado Magistrate's Court on Monday, spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

He is allegedly linked to several cases of rape and robbery.

The woman's body was discovered in a local forest on Saturday.

"Her hands were chopped off, her eyes gouged out and her private parts were also cut off. She bled to death."

On Wednesday, police released an Indian couple who were wrongfully arrested for the crime on Saturday.

"[He] misled the police when he claimed he was owed R70 000 and a vehicle as payment to his role in the murder," Mulaudzi said.

He entered the couple's shop with the woman's arm, allegedly in an attempt to implicate the couple. He left the limb in the shop, which led to the couple's arrest.

He was expected to apply for bail on 15 April.
