Rival groups protest at Terre'Blanche trial

2012-01-30 15:34

Ventersdorp - Rival groups demonstrated in Ventersdorp on Monday at the trial of two farmworkers accused of killing Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging (AWB) leader Eugene Terre'Blanche.

AWB supporters outside the building where the North Gauteng High Court was sitting played the Afrikaans song De La Rey. About 100 metres away, a group of local residents sang President Jacob Zuma's trademark Awulethu’ Mshini Wami (bring me my machine gun).

Police warned the two groups to quieten down.

Local resident Pule Plaatjie accused the AWB group of making the most noise. AWB member Jerry Bezuidenhout said they were there to support Terre'Blanche's family.

"It is to show that people still care, for the white boers, our nation, and for the family."

Chris Mahlangu and a minor are accused of beating and hacking the AWB leader to death in his farmhouse in the North West on Easter Saturday in April 2010. He was 69.

Step-by-step description of evidence

Both have pleaded not guilty to murder, housebreaking, and robbery with aggravating circumstances. Mahlangu claims he acted in self-defence. The teenager has denied involvement in the crime.

On Monday, Eileen du Preez of the prosecuting team questioned Captain Albertus Joubert, who works at the criminal record centre and processed the murder scene.

He gave a step-by-step description of where evidence was found, saying there were several empty alcohol bottles outside Terre'Blanche's house and at the workers' quarters. These included an empty whiskey bottle.

Earlier in the morning, prosecutor George Baloi pointed out that Terre'Blanche's blood alcohol level was 0.09g/100 ml.

Kgomotso Tlouane, for Mahlangu, asked Joubert whether much alcohol was consumed. Joubert replied that it was difficult to say, but he did not think so.

The trial continues.

  • Stan - 2012-01-30 15:42

I find the whole AWB clan/cult a bit gayish...

      Oscar - 2012-01-30 15:54

Why? Do they remind you of yourself, Stan?

      Charlie - 2012-01-30 15:56

  • Heini - 2012-01-30 15:43

This will forever be South Africa's biggest problem......The need to belong, and identify with a group. A man was murdered, bottom line!!

      Hotkop - 2012-01-30 16:11

Who did he kill? Can you give me 1 name?

      boatmedic - 2012-01-30 16:19

      pdilapiso - and Mandella?

      Jannah - 2012-01-30 16:21

It's 'Live by the SWORD, die by the SWORD', pdilapiso. Nobody's saying Terre'blance was a nice guy, but your comment implies that it's okay to murder, as long as it suits your cause. The two guys who murdered him are JUST AS BAD as he was then - it was not okay for him to solve problems by murdering people, but it's okay for these guys to do that? DO NOT KILL, that's the law, whoever breaks it deserves punishment. Please man, stop being such a hypocrite.

      Hotkop - 2012-01-30 16:23

pdilapiso, come on, I want a complete namelist of the people he killed. I want to publish them so people can see what a monster he was. COME ON! HELP ME OUT PDILAPISO!

      David - 2012-01-30 16:25

pdilapiso. You idiot learn to spell then come back and post your comments. You are more than likely on of those little f%^kers, who ran around not knowing what your people were fighting for. Someone will SORT you out.

      Hotkop - 2012-01-30 16:26

I still want to know who were those many people ET killed. I only need names, then I'll rest my case.

      chris.debeer1 - 2012-01-30 16:31

Hey Hotkop he can not tell the difference between SORT and SWORD how can you be so cruel to expect a list of names???

      JasperSA1 - 2012-01-30 16:32

Agreed... But unfortunately there will always be people like Stan amoungst us...

      boatmedic - 2012-01-30 20:00

  • Colourless - 2012-01-30 15:43

I'm sorry but BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Do these people not have jobs? Did they not get enough of school? The man was murdered, regardless of colour or creed the law must take its course...

      Colourless - 2012-01-30 16:01

Ye we could say to these groups "You got served". BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! (I'd be sympathetic but this is ridiculous).

  • Kala - 2012-01-30 15:43

Its so nice to see two different race groups competing in song and dance. And to think that a hundred or so years ago there would have been spears and bullets flying...

      Deon - 2012-01-30 15:49

kala, Deon and David...thumps up to you three for your comments

  • Hotkop - 2012-01-30 15:47

Shows you the mentality of the acused supporters. All those supporters are supporting murderers. They are probably murderers them selves.

      Hotkop - 2012-01-30 16:18

Did a ghost kill him with a panga? They did it.

  • Jayne - 2012-01-30 15:47

Wow..... reporters must be really desperate for a story. Two groups of bystanders playing music and singing songs! Come on, what is the relevance?

      Juan - 2012-01-30 16:31

Or Mandela arriving at his home in Joburg. Now that's been really desperate

      Hotkop - 2012-01-30 16:05

      JasperSA1 - 2012-01-30 16:35

Lets lock the mshini wami and the de la rey singers and dancers in one stadium together..two less problems for South Africa.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-01-30 16:39

You forgot to mention to issuing people with earplugs who stay close to that stadium. ....and it will take another few years to decide on the stadium. All we do in this country is talk, talk, talk........ ;)

  • Shirley - 2012-01-30 16:27

So because he had alcohol in his blood he deserved to get murdered? For goodness sake just get on with the trial-a man was murdered and the culprits need to be punished like all other murderers!Certain groups must GROW up and stop making EVERYTHING political and racial. Singing "bring my machine gun" is not exactly a peaceful protest. Allow the trial to run its ciurse and allow the friends and family to mourn and find closure! No one says you have to like them or their beliefs-just leave them alone and stop aggrivating the situation!

      Deon - 2012-01-30 16:40

It sounds like he was pretty defenceless and not self-defence.

  • david.lebethe - 2012-01-30 16:40

I trust Afriforum, Human Rights Commission and the Equality Court have taken note of the fact that "boer" is not racist. In terms of the report, Judge Motata was afterall not wrong to refer to whites as "maburu". We all heard it loud and clear [from then horses mouth] that whites like being referred to as "boers" and there is afterall nothing sinister about the word.

      Jason - 2012-01-30 18:28

      You right David.lebethe - a horse indeed!!

  • Andre - 2012-01-30 16:40

If you are old enough to commit assault or murder, you are old enough to stand trial. All these questions of police training has got nothing to do with the facts of the case and are purely sideshows.
