Johannesburg - A stretch of road between Tzaneen and Haenertsburg in Limpopo had to be closed to traffic on Sunday while provincial services dispatched a disaster bus to an accident scene that left two people dead and 60 injured.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said in a statement at least 60 people were injured and two killed when a bus and a bakkie collided head-on on the R528 George’s Valley between Tzaneen and Haenertsburg.

"Shortly after 13:00 paramedics from numerous services were dispatched to the scene where they found people standing around a bus wedged against the Armco barrier and a Nissan Hardbody bakkie.

"Upon assessment they found that three people in the bakkie were still trapped. A woman and a girl, believed to be 16 years old, were found with serious injuries," he said.

The bodies of a man and a boy, believed to be eight years old, were found in the vehicle.

"The local fire and rescue services had to use rescue equipment to free them from the bakkie. The two survivors were stabilised on the scene and rushed off to a nearby hospital for further treatment."

Vermaak said the local provincial emergency services dispatched a disaster bus to the scene, where paramedics triaged and loaded all the occupants from the bus.

They were all treated for minor injuries, and taken to nearby hospitals for further assessment.

The exact cause of the collision is not yet known. Local authorities will conduct an investigation into the collision.
