Johannesburg - A man who was allegedly part of a gang that hijacked and robbed three police officers in 2010 was arrested on Friday, Johannesburg metro police said.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said metro police assisted the SA Police Service's crime intelligence unit to arrest the man in Motsoaledi informal settlement in Diepkloof, Soweto.

"He was on the run since May 2010, when he allegedly with two other people, hijacked three police officers in Naturena and robbed them of their service firearms," he said.

Minnaar could not immediately say if the vehicle they hijacked was a police car or a private vehicle.

"The other two were arrested in 2010 and the firearms were recovered. The one evaded arrest, but has now been caught. He will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon," he said.

"One [of the other two] was sentenced to 12 years, and the other one is still on trial. Hopefully with the new arrest the matter can now be finalised."
