Durban - A robber was killed and another was wounded in a shoot-out with an off-duty police constable in Newdawn Park, Newlands, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

Three armed men robbed a 62-year-old woman at her home in Newdawn Park on Thursday. They held her up in her lounge and demanded money and the keys to the safe, said Captain Thulani Zwane.

"They locked her up with her son and daughter in the bathroom before ransacking the house," he said.

The family alerted an off-duty policeman living in their outbuilding.

"As he approached the house, he was shot in the chest and he returned fire," said Zwane. The men fled.

"We found one of the men lying dead in a road in the vicinity and the other was rendered immobile by his injuries," he said. It was not known if the third robber was wounded.

Police seized a pistol, four cellphones, and a computer.

"The wounded policeman, who is in his early 30s, was admitted to hospital and stabilised," Zwane said.

Wow..what a brave guy. I think the medical staff should leave the robber's gun wounds uncleaned so that they can become sceptic. He'll die a slow painful death or die from a heart attack. Speedy recovery for the cop.

They should be tied to the middle of the field in Orlando stadium and ransacked of all of their clothes, a public spectacle for all to see and throw tomatoes and other sharp objects at

Two down-two million to go. A brave thing to do and I hope his efforts are rewarded! This is the kind of result we need on a daily basis. Hope the policeman makes a full and speedy recovery!

Our society today feels good when robbers get shot - for these guys have no feelings for other, but themeselves. Well if I could I would ask the guy that died if he thinks dying for cellphones and a computer was worth it. Maybe they can ask the injured human rat the question. Hope the wounded policemen gets a medal and has a speedy recovery.
