Johannesburg - A robber was killed and another wounded in a shoot-out with police in Phoenix on Wednesday morning, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

The man died in hospital, while the other remained under police guard in hospital, said police spokesperson Thulani Zwane.

Police received a tip-off about a planned house robbery in the area. "They started to do their observation and they saw a suspicious-looking Toyota Etios vehicle which fitted the same description given to them, entering the premises of a house to be robbed," said Zwane.

"When the suspects noticed the police officers, they fled the scene and started to shoot towards the police."

Police returned fire, causing the men to crash their vehicle into another vehicle.

Two unlicensed 9mm pistols, which were found with the men, were confiscated.

"One of the firearms recovered from the suspects belonged to a police officer who was shot and killed in Qumbu, Eastern Cape," said Zwane.

The wounded man was wanted in Qumbu for murder, attempted murder and escaping from custody.

He will appear in the Phoenix Magistrate's Court once he is discharged from hospital and faces charges of attempted murder, attempted house robbery, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
