Robbers blind businessman with acid

2012-11-16 08:37

Pretoria - A Pretoria businessman has been left blinded after a robber threw 5 litres of acid all over him.

Martin Coetzee, 49, told Beeld that if he doesn’t regain his sight in a year’s time, he will get a cornea transplant.

Coetzee said police had still not visited him to take a statement from him following the robbery on Saturday October 13 at his place of business in Silverton.

Coetzee said he recognised the robbers as employees.

Coetzee was the production manager at The Dairy Shop and went to work that Saturday when he felt someone pushing the door shut.

“I used force to open the door. I saw a man was hitting the woman who handled the money. At the desk two 5 litre tins of acid had already been opened.”

Coetzee went inside to hear what was going on when he was pushed down by a man who threw acid at him as he got up.

The robbers fled empty-handed and Coetzee ran for the nearest hose pipe to wash the acid from his face.

A police spokesperson said Coetzee’s statement had not yet been taken as the investigative officer had been on leave and then had to attend court cases.

Shoking. The invetigating officer is on leave and then had to attend court cases. That's why people end up killing this cops because they are useless.

      michael.horton.566790 - 2012-11-16 08:58

I don't understand why they could not assign another investigator to him... So you want to tell me then, while this officer is on leave, there are hundreds of people that have to wait until he returns??? Any place of work, regardless, have to make arrangements to assign another employee in the absence of one who is on leave or sick... This is just shocking...

      jackie.m.dickson - 2012-11-16 09:10

Disgusting! Its over a month later & no-one has bothered to get his statement?? There is no excuse for this!

      uwe.merkle.5 - 2012-11-16 09:14

What in THE f*ck is going on here?!

      BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-11-16 09:28

Absolutely unacceptable. Get your house in order SAPS. Pathetic

      johan.harlaar.9 - 2012-11-16 09:33

      He is still on leave?????

      mfrater - 2012-11-16 09:35

Viva ANC? F2@ken useless government, they are failing this country in every sector, from crime, to justice, to industry striking left right and centre. WHERE ARE YOU MR. PREZ!?!?!?!?!?

      mlungisi.botha - 2012-11-16 09:46

@Kgolane.thulare you stupid f*ck. He’s blind (can’t see) after he had five (5) litres (same amount as a large box of cheap wine from a bottle store) of acid (the stuff they put in car batteries and use to swimming pools) poured on his face. If you put a spoon in acid it will disappear overnight. Imagine (think) what it does to his eyes and skin. COMPRENDO???

      derek.swart.98 - 2012-11-16 09:54

@Kgolane what part of blinded don't you understand!! Chop

      colin.langley - 2012-11-16 09:57

Ok....dear dear Kgolane. Having read this article WHAT PART OF BLIND DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND?

      BulletProof. - 2012-11-16 09:58

A police spokesperson said Coetzee’s statement had not yet been taken as the investigative officer had been on leave and then had to attend court cases. Hey Criminals you can do what ever you want bacause the police is on permanente leave for 20 years.

      Don.Tandy - 2012-11-16 11:09

@kgolane - sometimes it is better to be silent and thought a fool, than to say (write) something and remove all doubt.

  • sean.efstratiou - 2012-11-16 08:42

lol...on leave so I guess there's no one else that can help... PATHETIC is what we can call our police

      Gyspsydawn - 2012-11-16 09:07

totally agree! but he should be lucky he wasn't told, "you can make a case if you really want to", after being burgaled for the 4th time!! obviously "protect & serve" is not understood by 90% of our civil servants, the police! most of them act as if you are a hassle to them when you report an incident, or like the poor lady in Garden Route, who approached a police van for assistance, she was raped!! WTF is going on here people?? is not time we ALL stood together as citizens and DEMANDED better governance???? remember all these things when next you vote!

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-11-16 09:32

Our police are useless. My advice is to be prepared and shoot the thugs before they injure or kill you!

      SharonE - 2012-11-16 09:56

I am torn here, can't decide who is worse, the crooks or the cops. You don't expect help from the crooks...

      brian.connell.18 - 2012-11-16 09:59

Wrong word, George, animals don't do this to each other. As to what word would adequately describe these hooligans - I have no idea. And as for the police, well they can share the word if we can find one. I have spilt acid on my arm. It burns like crazy. Intense pain. I cannot imagine the indescribable pain of having acid in eyes. And after all that, the idiots who did this, employees apparently, got away empty-handed. Welcome to Africa.

  • wynand.bothma - 2012-11-16 08:52

    Police Farce!!! PIGSS!

  • brad.ken.18 - 2012-11-16 08:55

This is LOWER than barbaric! $#^&Y!!!!!! Lower than savagery!

  • attie.mostert.9 - 2012-11-16 08:59

Always the same excuses from police. Speedy recovery!!!

  • trevor.bush.9655 - 2012-11-16 09:00

Catch them, hand them over to the victim and give him 5lt of acid and return the favour.

      ryan.a.smith.3958 - 2012-11-17 12:06

is there actually anyone who would think thats not fair ? besides the criminal himself obviously :p

  • Jane - 2012-11-16 09:01

And this is why crime seldom gets solved in this country. So there is only one investigating officer? What becomes of all the possible evidence in the meantime, fingerprints, fibers that could lead back to the assailants, oh wait that's how they solve crime in other countries. In South Africa we have to rely on eye witnesses and even then you lucky if there is a conviction!

  • Bertverlinde - 2012-11-16 09:05

Bloody animals. Is acid a new criminal thing in SA or does this happen in other countries as well? Disgusting.

  • eland.snitbul - 2012-11-16 09:06

Useless police, criminals with no respect for life or quality of life. Leaving someone maybe permanently blind for some cash. The repercussions for the actions of criminals is non existing in SA, change the law, make it a "Eye for an eye" and they would have thought twice about permanently blinding someone for some money or items. Bring back the death penalty and look at the crime rate going down.

  • jeremy.thewasp - 2012-11-16 09:08

I am so suprised the SAPS haven't been there yet - thats not like them? Are you talking about the Tortoise's dressed in a blue uniform - you can finish a cup of tea by the time it takes them to fetch a pen when you there to give a statement - best you take justice in your own hands and deal with them or I promise you - Nothing will happen - trust me!

  • maureen.churchill.9 - 2012-11-16 09:13

So then, let me understand this, when the investigating officer is on leave the whole system shuts down is that it? WHAT A FEEBLE EXCUSE FOR NOT DOING YOUR JOBS. Wake up South Africa is in total disarray.

  • hendrik.andries.5 - 2012-11-16 09:16

How life works: 1. If you are on my property without my permission, you will be shot 2. If you are looking for water at night, you will be shot 3. If you came to close to my family, you will be shot How will you be shot? 9 Warning shots through you're head.

      jeremy.thewasp - 2012-11-16 09:20

Ha Ha Ha Hennie - you rock dude!!!! Great advice indeed "But Officer I gave him 9 warning shots"

      Joe - 2012-11-16 09:24

      *your head

      brad.ken.18 - 2012-11-16 10:14

      Hahahaha! Excellent!

      vlammie.pilot - 2012-11-16 11:54

You wont have to explain anything, the cops are on leave...hahaha! Everyone must do their bit for preventing crime by expiring the criminals. The state should pay us then.

  • marcelle.joubertdurandt - 2012-11-16 09:17

Sometimes SILENCE is the best comment, because at this point - I HAVE NO WORDS.

  • nashmeia.ramphaul - 2012-11-16 09:19

OMW - So the investigating officer was on leave? Why not appoint another investigating officer? Were they on leave too??? I agree - the only way crime will eradicate in this country is shoot-to-kill and if ever asked why by the Law, then respond, \Your guys were on leave / useless\

  • chris.booise - 2012-11-16 09:29

Oh my goodness!! What kind of human being do something like this. They must be removed from society. And shame on the SAPS for taking their time with this case.

  • linda.duits - 2012-11-16 09:32

Go to the cop station and report it yourself, otherwise you're not going to get any results. If you don't get joy talk to the station commander, this is pathetic! This is attempted murder, we should all start toyi- toying to bring back the death penalty. SA is becoming lawless fast!

      kyle.chetty3 - 2012-11-17 04:51

      I second that

  • johan.harlaar.9 - 2012-11-16 09:32

And there wasn't an other who take up the case? I have no words for this. Is maybe because the rest was deemed incompetent?

  • john.p.steyn - 2012-11-16 09:33

Hennie my boy!!! Ek stem saam. That's the only language bos slaaper type animals understand. A bullet to the head. That would take some pressure off of our justice system.

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-11-16 09:34

WTH!You are a white man and therefore the Police will take their time. If they ever catch this useless BASTARD he will most probably,if found guilty, spend minimum time in jail. These types should be left to "street Justice"

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-11-16 09:40

@kgolane.thulane if you read what Martin Coetzee told Beeld you will note that he said:the robber threw five liters of acid all over him which I believe could be over his face too. This would blind you and you would NOT be able to drive. Wonder what you would do?

  • jenniferann.palmer - 2012-11-16 09:47

Bloody cops are useless...good for nothing twits!!!

  • jeanine.rowland - 2012-11-16 10:01

The police have just one investigating officer?? Interesting. No wonder the justice system has turned to a pile of S%&@!!!

  • Prince Bird - 2012-11-16 10:05

    Shame on our police officials

  • willem.dehaan.94 - 2012-11-16 10:21

Now, that is what I call SERVICE! We used to have a Police FORCE that dealt rapidly with crime and criminals. We now have a police service that appears to be there to serve the criminals - protect them from the law abiding citizens who wish to punish the crims when caught in the act and to help them escape by delaying investigations and throwing away dossiers. Time we had a Police FORCE again, mean and lean, the bane of the crim and the protector of the law abiding citizen who actually pays the salary bill.

      flysouth - 2012-11-16 14:45

Many in the police force (sorry 'service') are themselves criminals in their spare time and even during working hours - for sure! This phenomenon even extended to the very top, remember Selebi?

  • Jaco JP Venter - 2012-11-16 10:25

Then u send a other police officer to attend to the case if one is busy or on leave that is no excuse for not taking a statement.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-11-16 10:38

    Bloody savages.

  • Don.Tandy - 2012-11-16 11:06

Sounds like our pathetic inept police force are operating to their usual standard of ineptitude. Anarchy Nepotism Corruption - business as usual on the gravy train.

  • marius.a.visser - 2012-11-16 11:09

    Effing animals!!!

  • ulandi.potgieter - 2012-11-16 11:32

So there is no other person to full in the investigator place until he comes back from leave or what? I'm just asking?

  • angelique.p.ervin - 2012-11-16 11:33

Its truly just sad that this is what our country and 'human beings' have come down too. The man goes to work to make an honest living, to go somewhere in life, to add to the countries economy and this is what he gets for it??? Disgusting...

  • aspruyt - 2012-11-16 11:56

Fail police, nothing new. All the best to Mr. Coetzee.

  • riotousr - 2012-11-16 12:09

... and the SAPS in the vicinity of Silverton (or cluster area) have only one investigating officer. The delay tactics that SAPS are playing is but making evidence to fade away. There is Martin Coetzee and the woman who handles money who could provide useful information about the crime but the longer they delay the more these witnesses are likely to forget key events in the crime. The criminals must be found and they must be sentenced to death by stoning. Khayelitsha are doing an excellent job and taking criminals off the slow justice system.

      flysouth - 2012-11-16 14:47

Death by stoning? Not bad and we can all get involved in that - but I prefer the 'garotting with a wire' method - in public, to encourage the others!

  • annemariebotha.lanigan - 2012-11-16 21:45

I pray that you make a full recovery mr coetzee. As for the scumbags who did it (yep those people who you helped by employing) i wish that they suffer intolerably for the rest of their vile lives. As for the SAPD, they were probably off selling their uniforms to a local blue light gang or maybe busy sleeping for the last month.

  • Jack - 2012-11-17 10:21

Evidence of government complicity in crime? When you are willing to pilfer billions from the taxpayers, keep public records secret, lie to people, why on earth would you want to chase criminals?

  • norbert.schweighofer - 2012-11-25 02:48

What would have happened if the cop would have died ???? Forget about the incident and shelve the docked?. Now I know why the expression >Dumb Cops<

  • conrad.snyman - 2012-11-25 08:36

uncivilized africa, this proofs it yet again.

  • CRYRSA - 2012-11-25 10:41

I know this is bad news and we need read this to make us more aware. But criminals also read. Sad but true. Barbarians wish they could get the same treatment.
