Durban - Patrons of an upmarket restaurant in Mount Edgecombe, Durban, were subjected to a horrific ordeal when a gang with AK47s rushed into the eatery demanding wallets, jewellery and cellphones.

The incident happened on Saturday night at the Marco Polo restaurant, reported The Mercury.
The owner of the restaurant, Paul Sheppard, was assaulted but no shots were fired by the robbers who also had 9mm pistols and R5 assault rifles.

A suspicious-looking couple who walked in the restaurant before the robbers, ordering a take-away pizza, were believed to have been checking out the scene before the criminals arrived.

Minutes later a gang of more than 10 men rushed into the restaurant, holding up the security guard, while most of the patrons hid under the tables.

“At one point a child, in a pram, started to cry and the men were yelling at him to shut up,” said security company director, Anthony Feuilherade, who was having dinner at the restaurant at the time.

While patrons were robbed of wallets and cellphones, Sheppard was taken to the safe but was unable to open it.

The men took bottles of liquor instead and left.

The entire robbery lasted just three minutes.

Police were investigating.
