Robbers kill dog trying to protect owner

2013-02-28 10:00

Cape Town - Armed men shot and killed a dog that was trying to protect its owner during a robbery at a house in Brackenfell in Cape Town.

The dog’s owner came back from the bank and was approached by two men in a VW Jetta who demanded money, reported the Cape Argus.

“The man resisted and the dog ran up to save him. As the dog was attacking the men, one of them shot the dog,” said police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk.

It was not clear what kind of breed the dog, named Tina, was.

Tina was taken to the SPCA where she later died from two bullet wounds.

The men had fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police were investigating.

      AFC - 2013-02-28 10:36

Maybe that's why these dogs are racist....

    dogs > humans

      PeggySven - 2013-02-28 10:41

It would seem that your statement is correct. Humans kill for nothing more than a few rands, while dogs will protect their human with their life if necessary. I would rather have a dog protecting me than a so called human that rapes, disembowels and tortures other humans for fun.

      godesha - 2013-02-28 11:44

Peggy, you took the words out of my mouth. Just sad that this loyal dog had to pay the highest price. RIP Canine friend.

I hope they get caught and put before a firing squad. They looked for trouble and they found it!

      carol.harvey.9406 - 2013-02-28 11:35

Oh my gosh ... a firing squad !! We could only HOPE and PRAY that such punishment could exist !!

  • mofstok - 2013-02-28 10:48

This man should have had a gun and fought back, but our restrictive laws keep self defense firearms out of the hands of law abiding citizens. May the brave dog rest in peace, you served your owner well.

      bryan.webber.904 - 2013-02-28 14:39

I wonder what god dam idiots would give this comment a thumbs down.

Where does NEWS 24 get their journos? The poor grammar in the headline is astounding.

      dominique.wood.14 - 2013-02-28 11:03

I know right! I still remember my first lesson on ambiguity back in school. The example my teacher used was, "I once shot an elephant in my pygamas". lol.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-28 11:17

Olliebromley. Actually the word is journalists.

      Olliebromley - 2013-02-28 11:41

@jacqui- yes I know I was abbreviating, but you have to admit the grammar in most of these articles is horrific. I thought that one would need to at least compose a sensible sentence to get this kind of work. Rant over!

      Roz Rose - 2013-02-28 12:19

so the dog is actually the criminal then? lol

  • Tuscar Tau Tau - 2013-02-28 10:54

      arc.con.98 - 2013-02-28 11:18

Don't think he'll understand still. Trying to tell him it's this unconditional love one gets from your pet will only confuse him.

My heart goes out to the family. Our beloved Bulldog Havoc was shot by the men trying to hijack my father-in-law in our driveway. After they shot him they panicked and fled. Our Havoc was our guardian angel that day.

  • Roz Rose - 2013-02-28 12:18

What? You didnt get it? The criminals were trying to protect the owner from the dog. What did you think?

  • christiana.vespucci - 2013-02-28 15:14

Yup. Whatever that block head Zuma utters (just like what Julius utters). They think. "Oh we sing kill the boer now we kill the boers". Same as what Zuma uttered about dogs, now they killing dogs. I'd rather take in a Stray than take in a homeless person that would eventually end up raping and killing me. Jeez if eleven year olds are on a killing spree. I wonder what a 6 year old is capable off. WELCOME TO AFRICA GUYS. THIS IS WHERE WE YOU WILL FIND EVERYTHING HEADING BACK TO IT'S ORIGINAL STATE.

      christiana.vespucci - 2013-02-28 15:17

Sorry forgot to add that "I'd rather take in a stray dog than a homeless person".
