Johannesburg - Two suspected robbers have been shot and killed by security guards in Ngqamakhwe, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

The two were allegedly robbing a fruit and vegetable shop on Friday when security guards were alerted, said police spokesperson Jackson Manatha.

"A shoot-out ensued resulting in the fatal shooting of the suspects who died on the spot," he said.

Police found unlicensed firearms and ammunition at the scene, and two murder cases were opened.

He said the senior public prosecutor would have to decide whether to prosecute the guards.

Manatha said the deceased had not yet been identified.
