Johannesburg - Two suspected robbers were killed and three arrested after a shoot-out with police in Randburg, Johannesburg, on Thursday, Gauteng police said.

Five men stormed into a house in Sundowner, Randburg, and held up a domestic worker and three children aged between five and 15, around noon, police spokesperson Augustinah Selepe said.

The domestic worker pressed the panic button and Londoloza security personnel responded and alerted police.

Selepe said when the robbers saw the security company they fled with electrical appliances, a laptop, and a cellphone.

"Police who were responding to the alert noticed the bakkie at the corner of President Fouche and Malibongwe Drive. A shoot-out ensued between the suspects and the police," she said.

"The suspects lost control of their vehicle and it hit a traffic light and two other motor vehicles that were standing at the robot."

Two men were shot and killed and two were injured and were taken to hospital. One was arrested.

Police were investigating a case of armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of stolen property.
