Johannesburg – A Midrand woman opened fire on robbers through a closed window, shortly after her husband was robbed of a large amount of money.

Jean Vermeulen’s husband, André, was robbed by three men – one of whom was carrying an Uzi sub-machine gun – after they followed him to his house from an ATM in Centurion.

Vermeulen owns a construction company and had drawn money to pay his workers.

According to police spokesperson Mmakgomo Semono, the men followed Vermeulen to his house in Glen Austin, Midrand, at about 14:00.

One of the robbers held the electronic gate open to let the others in.

While Vermeulen was being held by the robbers, Jean (who was in another part of the house) saw what was happening and fetched a pistol.

She opened fire on them. The men returned fire and nearly emptied the Uzi’s magazine.

According to Semono, no-one was injured during the shoot-out.

No-one has been arrested yet.
