Roodepoort power station fire causes havoc

2012-09-17 09:28

Johannesburg - One person was electrocuted at a Roodepoort sub-station on Monday, causing a fire which left the area without electricity after an incident of cable theft, Johannesburg City Power said.

Spokesperson Sol Masolo said the body of a person who had been electrocuted was found in the Roodepoort sub-station.

The electrocution was the cause of a fire in the substation, which left Roodepoort and the surrounding area without electricity.

While it was not yet known why the person was there, the sub-station had also been hit by cable theft, Masolo said.

The Roodepoort theft was one of two robberies. There was another instance of cable theft in Roodetown.

Masolo could not say when power would be restored to Roodepoort.

The fire at the sub-station also knocked out traffic lights, resulting in traffic jams, the Johannesburg metro police said.

Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said power to the traffic lights was expected to be out for the rest of the day.

Minnaar said morning traffic was "very, very heavy" as a result of the power outage.

Metro police officials had been deployed to direct traffic at the main intersections in Roodepoort.

Are you there? Send us your eyewitness accounts

Thanks Krispy, I couldnt have my coffee this morning!!!

  • wicus.berg - 2012-09-17 09:50

"Metro police officials had been deployed to direct traffic at the main intersections in Roodepoort" - Absolute rubbish. It took me an hour and a half to get out of Ruimsig and I saw 0 cops manning any intersections.

      gieljam.gomtor - 2012-09-17 10:03

Foxy; Its true they where about to be deployed but will only be there later due to first having to wait for the electricity to come back on so that they could have coffee.

      JohhnyBGood - 2012-09-17 10:32

Nonsense! I saw some crackling on Hendrik Potgieter. Writing fines for yellow lane driving. :)

      alex.wiggett - 2012-09-17 10:45

They were out and about at the intersection of Hendrik Potgieter and Peter/Doreen but hell, they let vehicles turn from H/P into Peter from the N14 direction but also let vehicles turn from H/P into Peter from the Clearwater Mall direction. Chaos!! They don't even know what they are doing at an intersection. Another JMPD vehicle travelling up Peter over intersection with Beyers Naude - to stop and write tickets not direct traffic! Please!

      dimitripappas - 2012-09-17 11:18

No jokes, I saw some metro cops on Peter road (just down the road from Hendrik Potgieter) stopping cars doing inspections. Not a single cop at the intersections. All robots out of order. And people wonder why I personally complain about the state of our infrastructure? Imagine the cost to the local economy of Roodepoort because this one idiot decides to tamper with HV cabling? Whole substation needs repairs, not to mention all the businesses that are inoperative for hours probably the whole day, and the accidents that shall inevitably occur now that all the robots are out. Shockingly bad, pun intended.

A candidate for a Darwin Award, I think ... trying to steal cable from an electrical substation

      tuco.angeleyes - 2012-09-17 10:25

We should start our own version of South Africas' Dumbest criminals. Looking at the news lately we have a lot of candidates. He'd make it on the number 1 spot.

  • mike.bester1 - 2012-09-17 10:01

Bonus ,saves us from power disruption/court case fees/prisoner accommodation ECT. Ha Ha Ha

      dimitripappas - 2012-09-17 11:44

Indeed, but minus the power disruption part. He's left his legacy behind for a few hours here in Roodepoort since that sub-station did happen to turn into charcoal along with him. Unfortunately

  • - 2012-09-17 10:09

Guess it is Roddepoort's turn to go 4 days without electricity.....

  • wicus.berg - 2012-09-17 10:15

Now that the stupid government took away the Outsurance pointsman, we are left with nothing. Metro cops nowhere to be found. Wayne Minnaar, stop talking nonsense, your guys are nowhere to be found. All sitting at KFC buying their R5 coffee. Go out to the streets and see for yourself, it's chaos!

  • frans.vanderpoll - 2012-09-17 10:20

  • gregory.f.dean - 2012-09-17 10:48

Cable theft could also be seen as economic sabotage!

      bob.slap.5 - 2012-11-20 14:52

what economy??? South Africas?? its f*&ked already

  • lieslmari.simon - 2012-09-17 11:12

Our Government doesn't want to bring back the death penalty, so I guess it will just automatically come back. Hopefully they an now see that once the problem is elliminated we won't have that problem again. Case solved.

      dimitripappas - 2012-09-17 11:49

Kristy: "Live by the sword, and you shall die by the sword." - That's what God said, so we're just enforcing that law... Problem? Tell me, what's your take on the concept of 'Justice'? Do you believe it should be served in the fullest, or not? What about when someone senselessly denies another innocent person the right to live, or do so with dignity? You don't think they should face FAIR EQUAL justice which is the death penalty? If not, why not? There are strict no-go areas in the law, and people who "think that they are God" to take that law into their own hands at the expense of others in the comunity, should face the death penalty. Sure, not a mere thief such as this, but this thief got a natural death penalty anyway (and rightly so - look at all the damage ha has caused) without the need for any court ruling. VIVA KARMA ! :)

      werner.l.labuschagne - 2012-09-17 12:57

if we bring back the death penalty then the crime will come down and the Criminals will be Scared to do these crimes. we all work hard to buy the things we have and then they come and just take these things away from us.

      elewies - 2012-09-17 14:52

Werner don't be stupid. We have a very unreliable judicial system, therefore innocent people will also get the noose and that is just not acceptable. Me thinks if we create more jobs crime will come down- but that's just me

The municipality should take a photo of the Sparky who tried to steal cables, and post GRAPHIC pictures on giant billboards at EVERY powerstation to warn other potential thieves! As a tax + municipal services + road levies, etc, etc, etc paying citizen, I am sick and tired of having to be inconvenienced by these inconsiderate bastards who have this sense of 'entitlement'. Enough is enough!

  • nadia.eksteen.1 - 2012-09-17 14:23

  • jeroen.kelderman - 2012-09-17 15:39

"no idea when power will be restored", come on man really...................ffs

  • samantha.vanderwesthuizen.35 - 2012-09-17 15:42

This is why Jesus had to die for us...look at us, those who are happy about the death of the guy who tried to steal the cables and wish the same for other criminals are murders, you have commited murder in your heart...and that is the same thing as commiting the murder yourself. am i judging you, nope...because i am also human - so in other words not perfect and make mistakes to. and yes am waiting for all you "thumbs downers', dont care if you dont agree, its the truth. get your life right, Jesus is coming!

      jan.vos.353 - 2012-09-17 16:07

Samantha, you are really naive!!!! I've got Jesus in my life too, but also know that God gave us a mind, we're luckaly not animials which lives on instinct, so this idiot done something wrong and payed the price, nobody killed him, nobody is to blame except for himself.

      dimitripappas - 2012-09-17 16:29

Well said Jan. I'm Christian too, but God instructed us to work with all our heart, mind, soul as if working for Him and not for man. He promised abundance to those who ask and work for it. This thief was engrossed in poverty and theft, and was too inept and lazy to get a job like the rest of us. Quite the contrast. Now thousands of us must endure 3rd world bulls** because of that hopeless clown. Good riddance. God's created world is a better place without that - the same way it's a better place when cockroach and sewer rats populations are regulated

  • samantha.vanderwesthuizen.35 - 2012-09-17 16:51

@ Jan: we have our own will but we are not here to judge one another: Mat_7:2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Luk_6:37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: as for calling this guy an idiot: Mat_5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Jan do you know Jesus, cause Jesus would have wept for this guy no matter what he did, because Jesus loved Him...thats why He came: Eph 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: Eph 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

  • samantha.vanderwesthuizen.35 - 2012-09-17 17:05

Bottom line we are so far from perfect, each and every one of us thats why we are living in the time of grace...rather thank Jesus that you are still here and you have a second chance.

  • dimitripappas - 2012-09-17 18:19

Was very surprised and impressed that the power was back by 2pm today (where I stay at least) despite the warnings that it may be out for a week. To top it off, traffic lights were somehow all working (again, for me at least) and I got home with less than average traffic at 5pm! Very impressed with that side of things. Good job & Thank you to all the public workers that restored us from the madness caused by that idiot.
