67 minutes for Mandela Day

Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma and his European Union counterparts will meet in Pretoria on Thursday for the sixth South Africa-EU summit to honour the ailing national hero.

The Sunday Independent reported that the summit will be held on former president Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday – a date South Africa chose before Mandela fell ill. Both governments are holding thumbs that all goes well.

Apart from paying tribute to Mandela, Zuma, EU Council President Herman van Rompuy and EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso hope to strengthen the fight against piracy in the Indian Ocean and to learn from each other how to better combat what has increasingly become a common problem of unemployment, among many other issues.

EU ambassador to South Africa Roeland van de Geer said one of the main outcomes which the EU hoped to achieve was an agreement to increase maritime security in the Indian Ocean, mainly by co-ordinating the EU and South African anti-piracy patrols.
