Cape Town - International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane arrived in Iran on Sunday for bilateral meetings with that country's government.

It is the twelfth meeting of the SA-Iran joint commission and is set down for Sunday and Monday in Tehran.

Department spokesperson Clayson Monyela said the commission was one of South Africa's longest serving and most successful structured bilateral mechanisms.

They would deliberate ''geo-political and peace and security developments in their respective regions, to review the status of bilateral relations and to assess the potential for enhanced co-operation''.

''South Africa considers Iran to be an important friend and partner and recognises the important role Iran assumes regionally and internationally within global governance and multilateral architecture, particularly as the incumbent chair of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Others in the delegation include Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Mzwandile Masina, and senior government officials from the departments of energy, treasury, water and sanitation, and science and technology.
