SA belongs to the rich: Cosatu

2012-09-10 15:54

Johannesburg - South Africa belongs to the rich, not all who live in it, said Cosatu in the North West on Monday.

"Cosatu has observed that more often when a white farm owner is killed, for whatever reason, this makes headline news in every newspaper and radio station, and the whole criminal justice system stands up to make sure that the killer is brought to book," provincial secretary Solly Phetoe said.

"But when a black farmworker is killed by a white farm owner nobody cares, including the judicial system of our country."

Phetoe said there were a number of cases which were thrown out of court when a victim was black - "but they are brought to a conclusion when the victim is white".

Bail amounts followed the same trend, he said.

In the murder case of Eugene Terre'Blanche, the perpetrator was granted bail of R5 000.

"In the same year, Oupa Ranta was killed by a group of whites in Zeerust and they were all given a bail of R1 000. To date nobody knows where the case is," he said.

Recently a farmer allegedly killed a farmworker in the area of Vryburg by electrocuting him. The court granted him bail of R2 000, Phetoe said.

"Where is justice for those who do not have money?"

There was a need for government to ensure that the Constitution served all citizens, Phetoe said.

Kolobe you fool there will be apartheid employees in the system until the last black white or coloured person who was in employment in the first quarter of 1994 retires. If you dont know what you are saying, best to keep silent lest you show up your stupidity.

With a racist black ANC Government ruling for about the last 20 years, my heart and soul and tears go out to the persecution of the blacks by the very small in comparison minority, against the mighty and all powerful majority.

You've got it all wrong Vavi. South Africa belongs to all who live in South Africa. Take your white racism and shove it where the sun don't shine. The days of you thugs being able to continually blame everything on the white man are numbered. See yourself for the fools that you are and stop blaming whites. Get over yourself already!

      michael.vanrheenen.9 - 2012-09-10 16:08

Amen! Spoken like a true South African! It's been 18 years since apartheid! We can't still be blamed for the injustices of today... It's just ridiculous!

      marcusvandermerwe - 2012-09-10 16:49

@jobho.maguni - Why are you worried about where Irene comes from. Is it not more important where she (and all of us) are going? Do you really think race politics will solve poverty?

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-09-10 19:05

I agree with Irene! They cannot forever use apartheid and the white man as an excuse for all their failures. And slowly but surely, the electorate is realizing that they are all talk. Politicians must be held accountable and take responsibility for the ills that goes on in government, even if not directly their fault. If you are the head of department, act like it and manage your staff properly or be ready to take the blame when things f**k up. Is it apartheid / whities fault that R30bn is lost/stolen every year, due to corruption and cadre deployment? Hardly. There are so many black people that are intelligent and don't fall for the ANC's bulls*it. Their days are numbered.

      kevin.watson.7906 - 2012-09-10 21:09

Irene you are right, but he carried on driveling about what has become a dysfunctional prosecutorial and court system, which belongs to all of us having been given to us by the Government.

  • richard.hipkin - 2012-09-10 16:06

      lionel.defrontignac - 2012-09-10 19:47

Exactly; if you look at the staff of the magistracy and prosecutors, hardly any whites are left, so I dunno what the problem is. In any event the question of bail is decided by many factors, and not necessarily the severity of the crime...

      kevin.watson.7906 - 2012-09-10 21:11

Yes but we own the dysfunctional court system. It was a very expensive gift from an incompetent government.

Whites don't run the police, nor the judiciary, nor the friggin country anymore. You do, haven't you noticed? Don't you get tired of blaming whites for all your ills and don't you think you're starting to appear as if you're incapable of doing anything at all. Maybe Cosatu & the ANC need to look at where the real problems are - within your own members, your own leaders and your own organizations.

      shelley.vorster.9 - 2012-09-10 16:20

markH it will never happen, they lack the mentality to think that far

      Tony Lapson - 2012-09-10 17:26

Themba, I did some googling on the names you provided, and it seems that you are just naming whites in those departments. Do they run the show?

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-09-10 17:46

Tony I provided you with their titles. Are you using a fongkong google? Those names are well~known anyway. Did you just arrive in SA?

      raath - 2012-09-10 18:53

Don't all those people "work" for the ANC?

      mike.plansera - 2012-09-10 19:21

Themba, Jeff Radebe is the Minister of Justice. Menzi Simelane is the National Director of Public Prosecutions. These are the men in charge, or are you inferring they are puppets of the evil white man?

      lacrimosewolf - 2012-09-10 19:45

Accountability is an alien concept in a collectivist-thinking culture. From the petty thief to the most bloodthirsty murderer and all the rotten politicians in between, you'll never see any of them step up and admit they did wrong let alone ever try and put anything right. It is and always will be someone else's fault. They have a convenient scapegoat right now but even if there were no white people left, no rich people left, someone else would be blamed.

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-09-10 20:38

Mike you are right about Jeff Radebe, my mistake. Johnny de Lange was the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Affairs the last time I checked. He was the guy to whom Jeff Radebe accounted to in Parliament. Menzi Simelane is the suspended national director of public prosecutions. Johan Smit is the North West Pronvincial Director of Public Prosecutions whose decision it was to charge the Lonmin miners. You have written about 2, what about the rest? And the list is much longer by the way. I just don't have time to list everyone. But go to and click on members of the ANC. You will see how many whites are MPs under the ANC Banner. Then go the Dep of Justice's website and search for judges. You will be surprised how large the number of white judges we have. The NPA also has a number of whites in senior positions, such as the head of the Asset Forfeiture Unit, Willie Hofmeyr. MarkH`s post is a complete fabrication based on ignorance if it is not a deliberate lie

      mike.plansera - 2012-09-10 21:52

Themba, I think the point MarkH was trying to make is that you cannot blame the white population for the failures of the judicial system. He did not propose that we blame black people instead. He pointed out that since the ANC and Cosatu are in charge then we need to lay the blame at their door. If the ANC believes that their white members (the ones you mention) favours white people, then surely they can and should get rid of them. Apparently this is not the case. Also, only 3 of the 10 judges in the highest court in the country are white.

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-09-10 22:01

Mike, this cannot be sugar~coated: “Whites don't run the police, nor the judiciary, nor the friggin country anymore.” Mark H. The flipside of this statement is that `Blacks run the police, the judiciary and the friggin country.` I have proven that MarkH is either ignorant, or deliberately lies. I rest my case

  • nikondaniel - 2012-09-10 16:18

    Racist fools. Poor sods.

  • Tony Lapson - 2012-09-10 16:18

The world belongs to the rich. Why you have to focus on odd race cases in South Africa, I cannot understand. Saying these things isn't going to make things better. In the end it isn't the rich guy surrounded by the state of the art security system that will become the victim of a violent outburst from a Cosatu/ANCYL young supporter, it will be the hard working people who also dream of never having debt and financial responsibilities.

      shanthal.davids - 2012-09-12 16:27

  • shawn.swiegers - 2012-09-10 16:19

A few errors in the statement. Fisrtly bail is determined as a measure to ensure the person stands trial. It is in no way a reflection of the crime since innosense until guit is proven prevails. Secondly the media chooses what to print and what not to print. As for the justice system, it has been completely transformed with a great portion of magistrates and jusdges being of colour and of the femal gender. So again statements are released to the media without taking the whole picture into consideration.

  • peter.jefferies.90 - 2012-09-10 16:20

Why don't Cosatu ask the ANC? Which is run by black people! Are they saying that the ANC is racist to black people now?

  • dezzeyd - 2012-09-10 16:21

Last time i checked the people that killed the farm worker was arrested. Just remember justice is blind and can not see colour.

  • marius.vanderhoff - 2012-09-10 16:22

Phetoe - your a liar. And if you don`t know anything about the justice system it is best to keep your mouth shut. bail is not set on your race. bail is determined on different aspects. for excample if you are a flight risk, do you have previous convictions, are you curently out on bail, how difficult will it be to trace you if you decide to flee, ect. not on your race - it`s got nothing to do with it. i think you television is also set to black and white - racist. And you lie if you are saying black farm worker murders never reach the news. everyone known it because Cosatu always makes a racist story out of it - but not when a white farmer is killed. And i don`t wonder why - because you are racist. this article prove it.

  • nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-09-10 16:22

the difference between a white farmer being killed & a black farmworker is 1) the white farmer provides food security, so he would naturally be far more economically relevant to the country 2) the murder of a white farmer is politically motivated & condoned by the ANCYL, part of the Governing part, so that is in effect Government sponsored racist Solly, instead of being a hypocritical racist idiot, rather shut up

      phae.rayden - 2012-09-10 17:17

Did I just read you think one person is worth more than another due to economical relevance? Then you have just validated Solly's point view. Own goal.

      blip.noodlum - 2012-09-12 00:59

Food security doesn't mean home-grown food. Food security merely means security of a guaranteed supply of food from wherever it is grown, either locally or overseas. So nobody is dependent on local farmers for avoiding starvation. Not in this day and age where food can be flown or shipped in from anywhere. We're not in the 17th century any more and Cape Town isn't needed to get food security for the crews of passing ships headed east for India or Indonesia any longer.

  • johnny.fortuna.1 - 2012-09-10 16:22

Whats the point in trying anymore?! It seems that no one is prepared to look past racial divides. At first It was disheartening to see our beloved country take a step backwards. Then frustrating to see things go from bad to worse. No matter what efforts are made, it's not good enough for the black or white public. Every action breeds hate in some way and it seems that South Africans thrive off of it. I am ashamed to be a South African.

Government mismanagement of public works who forget when we got rid of apartheid they gained a public works system that was all in good order. Incorrect policy procedures, mismanagement and corruption abounds. Black diamonds abound and an establishment of a black middle class which is good ... but the masses who are still suffering get manipulated by the top anchalant, as the votes are from the oppressed masses. I'm not a racist but I'm a behaviourist and quite frankly I'm appalled with our country. One segment of our population is on genocide watch and being indescrimately murdered , stand corrected here but a woman gets raped every 23 seconds in SA I believe , our murder and violent crime rates are up there with the most wicked of countries. South Africa is not ruled by the rich. It is held hostage by the poor. It is held hostage by a disadvantaged, uneducated electorate who are manipulated into voting corrupt, self serving leaders into power - a result that damages the economy. Since when is being rich a crime or something to be held accountable for? We live in a constitutional democracy and no one should have to be instigated for being wealthy unless you have profited from corruption, fraud or any other form of ill-gained scheming, practically the motto of the ruling party. So please, look in your own back yard first and then get back to the people who bring investment and opportunities to this country. Then apologise and seek to create mutually beneficial policy's with business. See..? this way we both win. No? Ok carry on with the toyi toying, get back to us when you're at the edge of starvation.

    Who does the killing?

  • keith.ngobeni - 2012-09-10 17:29

Take blame game and race game out of cosatu,ANCYL and ANC statements they'll have nothing to talk to media about, how often do we hear or read that a black farm worker has been killed, if I recall my memory well it's very rare for such killings to happen, but killings of farm owners is a daily thing in south Africa this cosatu chap is just trying to get attention from the media nothing else.

Keith.ngobeni you forgot to switch your caps. You are supposed to be black remember?

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-09-10 18:03

Any unjustifiable murder, whether it occurs daily or rarely, must be condemned. Measures must be put in place to prevent ANY murder. You seem to think a rare murder does not count much. Put yourself in the shoes of a family member of ANY deceased person, or see a shrink

      Simon Le Roux - 2012-09-10 18:12

keith.ngobeni i salute you. you are one of the few in this country who actually are speaking with truth. farmers in south africa are an absolute necessity to ensure food security in our country. the uneducated are slaughtering farmers, which is endangering food security in SA

      keith.ngobeni - 2012-09-10 18:30

Themba I didn't mentioned anything about rare murder not counting it, yes any murder should be condemned and punished, but the statement from that cosatu guy sound like there's a spree killings of farm workers by farm owners, learn to read and understand statements before you jump for conclusions.

      keith.ngobeni - 2012-09-10 18:38

Wena sefako are you trying to tell me that I have to support barbaric remarks simply because they have been said by a black man, if you're that naive don't expect me to follow you I resist, if skin colour dominates your daily thinking that's entirely up to you don't expect other people to join you in your wicked world.

      U Thengi' skelem son.

Bonfire of the vanities...what about the rich black people? Why this idiotic statement? Cheapskate political score seeking.

  • winifred.watson.9 - 2012-09-10 17:42

Please tell me how many of these murderers are ever found and InkingaYabeLungu murder be it a black or a white or a green person does not make it right. The problem is our justice system has been rigged so there is really no proper justice anymore. I see you have the taste for blood like your messiah, when is used you to his advantage he will throw you to the wolves. Why dont you try and say something good for a change, maybe it might clear that head of yours.

  • frederikrudolph.vandyk - 2012-09-10 17:44

SA doesnt belong to the rich, neither does it belong to the poor, not anyone. WE belong to SA. Libertarianism! VIVA!

  • joseph.motloung.3 - 2012-09-10 17:45

This is very truthful. The justice system in the country favors monopoly white capital and the politically connected. But it seems odd for COSATU to say this after they adopted a hush-hush stance with regards to the massacre carried out by the forces of the SAPS on the striking mineworkers. Or could it be that the mine at the center of this controversy has the former general secretary of COSATU as a non-executive director
