SA charity nails Nigerian scammers

2012-04-14 21:00

Johannesburg - Two Nigerians who scammed a South African charity for burned children will appear in an Italian court on Wednesday on fraud charges, the Children of Fire NGO said on Saturday.

Children of Fire director, Bronwen Jones, and burn victim, 11-year-old Sizwe Hlope, will travel to Vercelli, in northern Italy, on Sunday for the court appearance of the two scammers.

Jones said the Nigerians stole an online photo essay on the NGO by John Moore of Getty Images to ask unsuspecting people for donations in 2009.

The money was to be deposited in two Italian bank accounts used by the Nigerians.

Jones laid fraud charges at the Brixton police station in South Africa and alerted the head of NGOs in Italy. Eventually Interpol and the Italian embassy in South Africa became involved and the Nigerians' Italian address, linked to the bank accounts, was raided and they were arrested.

"We want to put a face to these people who try, every day, to get money out of unsuspecting people on the internet," she said.

Sizwe was one of the children featured in the stolen photo essay.

"He is going to court to face down these people who have used his image and the images of 18 other children to encourage innocent people to deposit money in their bank accounts," said Jones.

Way to go ...... send them to hard labor in Siberia

      bluzulu - 2012-04-15 08:30

Deport them back to RSA. Damnit. We have enough issues trying to transform RSA and these damn Foreigners from all over the world come here to complete their criminal agendas. I don't believe in the Death penalty however foreigners found guilty of crime in RSA should get a "superior" deal from the Judiciary to ensure other foreigners with evil intentions get the message and stay away from RSA

      Louis - 2012-04-15 12:01

What low life Sh.t these scumbags are. Stealing from a charity. how low can these zeros go?

      Omo - 2012-04-15 15:35

I am always amazed how you South Africans reason!!!! You guys deserve the Oscars for "generalization". You just love to paint everyone with one brush. Afrikaners believe all black are rapist and murderers while SA blacks believe all white are racists. You guys have to calm down and think objectively. Yes Nigeria has a lot of criminal exports but that is to be expected. We have a population of 167 million and counting so even if 5% of our population are in to criminal activity , that is a whooping 8.35million criminals. Before the early 1990s Nigeria had a good reputation but since 1993 our reputation has been marred by these youngsters who are committing crimes everywhere.

      Omo - 2012-04-15 15:36

That however does not give anyone license to treat Nigerians badly. I have noticed based on travel experience that South Africans hate Nigerians more than any nation in the world. What i find disturbing is that in most cases the hatred is based on myths and hearsay instead of actual facts. You people need to learn how to separate Nigerian Criminals from ordinary law abiding Nigerians and Nigeria the country. I have seen on News24 where a blogger was openly praying that bombs be dropped on Nigeria to wipe out the whole population. Why would you want to kill 167 million people because of the 50,000 committing crime in your country? Your hatred of Nigerian and Nigeria is not justified. Your citizens live in Nigeria and are treated well stop discriminating against all Nigerians in general and stop asking honest Nigerian to explain themselves to you. This is a free country and I should be to go anywhere without having to explain myself because of nationality. If I am a criminal treat me as one but if I am a legit person let me be and do not insult my country to my face.

      Sheik - 2012-04-15 16:20

At OMO, The problem is that the South African Government is at fault, if our laws were better enforced then the 8.35 million (less the two in Italy)Nigerian criminals would not be here and no one would think Nigerians were bad.

      bluzulu - 2012-04-15 17:50

My comment was clearly aimed at Foreigners who commit crime in RSA. Not all Foreigners obviously...

      bluzulu - 2012-04-15 17:56

My question is why is everyone leaving their countries because of Dictators or Dictatorial Democracies run by the Army. Here in RSA we fought for a constitution and now we have a real home. Why aren't the locals of each country removing these pests in all forms for Government and installing a proper democracy. The obvious one is Muggers next door. I lived abroad for 13 years ( For Biso reasons) and couldn't wait to get back home.

  • Ted - 2012-04-14 22:40

With the way the stats are going, it will be soon South Africans! When people have no work and have a few brain cells, they scheme.

      Jacqui - 2012-04-15 11:18

Ted, I don't agree, when people are out of work they don't have to steal from others, no matter how many brain cells they have.

      Mary - 2012-04-15 19:10

Jaqui, then you simly don't understand the reality of ZA. Poor education followed by lowered standards, that encourage mediocrity. These out-of-work individuals couldn't become self-sustaining even if they wanted to. They were never taught to think, just "demand" and now the die is set .... permanently.

  • WigzellRM - 2012-04-14 23:03

Lock this trash away in an inhospitable environment for a long time....

  • Keith - 2012-04-15 00:22

South Africa should follow Denmark by deporting all the Nigerian criminals, these scammers are the real reason for the highest crime rate in our country, here in DENMARK the authorities are deporting all of these Nigerian scammers.

      Bless Boswell - 2012-04-15 10:03

      They'll just come back again!

  • Sagebrush - 2012-04-15 00:25

Nigerians put the Mafia to shame.

  • brainbowgold - 2012-04-15 04:12

Why is it when we hear "Nigerian" something deep inside squirms? The majority (as in nearly every Nigerian in the country) is up to no good and involved in crime. I challenge any Nigerian in South Africa to publicly declare what good he (seldom she??) is doing for the country. Get out of our beloved country. We are closing you down.

      Dave - 2012-04-15 07:40

Well said @Brainbow Gold. They wont be able to explain their worth to the country.Next time they'll be accusing us of being xenophobic.

      Dave - 2012-04-15 11:11

@Stalin i challenge all those professional Nigerians to stand up and be counted. They cant be silent while their countrymen r wreaking havoc all over the world and dragging their country's name in the mud.So long as they dont condemn their fellow Nigerians the world will continue to doubt their qualifications.

      Jacqui - 2012-04-15 11:21

Stalin, maybe these good Nigerians of yours could speak up about their crooked countrymen and women. What is racist and xenophobic here?. Don't showcase your pet beliefs here.

      bluzulu - 2012-04-15 11:29

      Nice 1 Brainbow,

      alansmartSnr - 2012-04-15 21:27

I am a very docile, peace loving person but I would jump for joy if we had another zenophobia epidemic like we had in the previous two years. The hapless pakistani's were targeted then but it should have been these Nigerians. They are almost solely responsible for all the drug trafficing and most of the crime in SA. I'm not generalizing. When you read about crime 9 out of 10 involve Nigerians. We should take a leaf out of Australias book.. there they are not welcome, no matter what fraudelent qualifications they present.

      Denny - 2012-04-15 22:15

Sorry Stalin. It seems we are still stuck in identifying people by groups. I think your rational thoughts are wasted here.

      Ashimizo - 2012-04-15 23:12

Brainbow, you ought to be called brain dead. Check with the department of health and department of higher education to know how many Nigerians are up to some good. I do not see why we should publicly declare our activities to fools. If you have a problem with the drug trade, stop buying drugs. At least we do not rape, mug and kill.

  • corncob - 2012-04-15 05:15

The Nigerians had more time to refine their trade ,but sad to say the South Africans are catching up fast and is soon going to over take them some of our political party's a point in time.

  • super105 - 2012-04-15 06:39

    Hang them!

      Mary - 2012-04-15 19:06

      With a rope scam ?? :-D

  • David Guest - 2012-04-15 07:15

our ANC government and all our politicians are so corrupt they are starting to make the nigerian scammers look like angels...

      Jacqui - 2012-04-15 11:25

The ANC government hasn't got time to do anything this week. They are planning a very important wedding. They will also be able to admire the R64million improvements to Zuma's harem then. So the Nigerians can do as they please they have nothing to fear.

  • Dave - 2012-04-15 07:47

Its so sad because the nigerians dont see anything wrong with scaming the whole world and they want to be taken serious with reputation,NO WAYS.

  • Greg - 2012-04-15 07:51

    Nigerians... Yet again

  • Franette - 2012-04-15 08:33

Well done to Ms Jones for reporting this and making the effort of bringing these scammers to book. Scamming has gone on far too long with no apparent means to stop it. Yes, this might be a drop in the ocean compared to what's going on everyday, but it is very encouraging that Interpol got involved. Hopefully other people will also now come forward and lay charges against these miserable cowards. Good luck to Ms Jones and Sizwe in Italy!

Sometimes I feel sad that we ever contributed funds for the upkeep of south african students who were studying in Nigeria during the aparthied era. I remember so well how excited we were when Mandela was realised from jail. And all of a sudden, every Nigerian has become an enemy.

  • ChrisKhanye - 2012-04-15 10:34

Some South Africans suffer from inferiority complex and would sell their soul to anyone coming from the North of Limpopo. I know of people who quit taking chronic medication because some god sent pastor from the North said so. My very naive brother-in-law who left his work because some pastor from the North advised him against working and that he should donate all his pension money to the "church" and god will reward him 1000% handsomely. And the moron duly obliged because he was destined to be the richest moron in Tembisa. Today, he's the poorest moron around and I've advised my distant sister to divorce the receipt for disaster. Some South Africans truly believe crooks from the North have these ridiculous powers to deliver them from their South African bondage. So-called churches have overtaken prostitution, taxi and spaza-shop businesses in profits except human trafficking and rhino horn smuggling. And all are Tax free! Some South Africans are so naive and can't make the difference between life in Lagos, Harare and Tembisa. And that they should be delivering Lagos and Harare from it's 99% endemic hopelessness and not the other way round. But some South Africans will believe anyone darker skinned than them e.g. I don't know how many times I've been referred to as pastor Chris after every public address and I'm so convincing - I've the accent! Laziness, Paranoia, Dependency, Stupidity, Inferiority, Desperation is big business and many are out there for easy pickings!

      Jacqui - 2012-04-15 11:31

ChrisKhanye, that is well said. Thank you for your opinion.

But i still wonder why your country SA will still support a nigeria as a world bank president, when u generalise every nigerian as scam. I will like to put a motion forward that SA should leave the continent of Africa for Nigeria and join EU or other continent as proxy.
