Cape Town - A South Africa man is missing at sea in Indonesia after being swept overboard while travelling to the Mentawaii Islands off Sumatra.

Brett Archibald, from Cape Town, on a surfing trip to the southeast Asian country, was aboard the boat Naga Laut when other passengers noticed that he was missing at breakfast, around 08:00.

He had last been seen around 04:30 local time.

According to a passenger, Archibald had been very seasick during a storm and may have fallen overboard when getting sick on deck whilst others were asleep on Wednesday morning.

The boat was immediately turned around to retrace the route. Indonesian maritime authorities are currently conducting a search and rescue mission.

The Australian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre is also involved in the operation, according to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).

According to a Facebook page set up, the 50-year-old Archibald is a good swimmer, and has been surfing for more than 40 years.

There is also reportedly a lot of debris such as tree trunks in the water, and the hope is that he may have been able to use something like that as a flotation device.

The NSRI has reported that water conditions in the area are reportedly warm (28°C) and flat.

Other private charter boats have also joined the operation, and will stay out overnight shining bright lights on the area that they have calculated Archibald to be according to the current and winds.
