SA man on Top 10 CNN Heroes list

2012-10-01 08:30

Johannesburg - A man from Soweto has made it into the final 10 nominations for CNN's Hero of the Year award.

Thulani Madondo, 30, could not believe it when he heard that an American professor who had been visiting South Africa had nominated him for the award, reported Beeld.

He said he couldn’t remember the professor’s name.

Madondo is the chairperson of the Kliptown Youth Programme (KYP), which provides food, after-school care and educational help to 400 children, and has also helped 18 youths get tertiary education.

He is one of 45 000 nominees from more than 100 countries.

Each of the Top 10 nominees gets $50 000 (about R412 000) for their organisation and the winner gets $250 000 (about R2m).

An inspiring video about Madondo will appear on CNN’s website on Monday.

You can vote for him by going to and clicking on his name.

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill can not be hidden (Matthew 5v14). The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day(Proverbs 4v18). The world has noticed your good deeds. Well done.

Funny enough if it wasn’t for CNN who are based thousands of miles away we would not have heard the good works of this young man! SA media is too negative, there are positives in our country if you could at least give us 10% positive and 90% negative news that will be ok. Lately if you want to be pessimistic just watch news

Great to see something positive and to see someone quietly making a difference, without seeking the limelight or rewards. Pity there are few "leaders" that fall in that category.

  • JournoSergio - 2012-10-01 09:53

I just voted 10 times (daily limit). Will try my best to do it every day until the winner is announced on December 3. Everyone should try the same too. Help a brother out :)

This is what the country needs , Positive input can only lead to a positive outcome for all those kids. Surely the Lotto can donate some of their money to help them with the capital etc they require or to cover their operating expenses

Those children are blessed to have this man in their lives. My family will continue to donate clothes, toys and our time to this foundation!
