SA mourns Marikana dead

2012-08-23 12:40

Rustenburg - Family members cried and collapsed at a memorial service on Thursday for the 34 miners shot dead during a protest at Lonmin's mine in Marikana, in the North West, last week.

Several women broke down when they saw the jackets, blankets and shoes worn at the memorial which had belonged to the workers who were shot dead by police after week-long violent protests at the Rustenburg mine.

One of the woman had to be carried out of the memorial service after being overcome with grief.

A bishop called on all the social workers and pastors to "please be visible where the mourners are... to help them".

Expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema, who was wearing sunglasses and chewing gum, sat in the front with the widows and older women. Suspended ANCYL secretary general Sindiso Magaqa was with Malema.

Eastern Cape resident Marcus Ndebe's 24-year-old son was one of those killed when police opened fire on the crowd.

Final resting place

Ndebe visited the spot where the shooting took place.

As dictated by his culture, Ndebe observed the area where his son died and said he came to take his son back home, his final resting place.

More than a thousand Wonderkop residents and dozens of clergymen and priests gathered under a white marquee at the edge of the informal settlement.

A second marquee was placed alongside the larger one to accommodate the overflow of mourners. Those without a place to sit carried umbrellas to shield themselves from the morning sun.

A priest took the stage and led the mourners in hymns before leading them along in cries of "hallelujah".

SABC radio news reported that the government abandoned its memorial service to join the community's one.

Attending the service were former ANC Youth League spokesperson Floyd Shivambu, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa, Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, Co-operative Governance Minister Richard Baloyi, North West Premier Thandi Modise and Rustenburg Mayor Mpho Khonou.

Banks of speakers

A large stage, with banks of speakers, was erected on the site where the shooting took place last Thursday. Musical instruments were laid out on the stage.

Presidency spokesperson Harold Maloka told Sapa the names of the 34 protesters could only be released with permission from their families.

Flags continued to fly at half-mast throughout the country in the national week of mourning.

South Africans gathered on Thursday at several venues across the country to remember those killed.

The death toll from the week of Marikana violence stood at 44, including the 34 miners and another 10 people who were killed during the protest, including two policemen and two security guards.

In Gauteng, Premier Nomvula Mokonyane was expected to lead a service later in the afternoon in Johannesburg. The service would be held in the Johannesburg City Hall.

Wits University would observe the day by marching against violence at its Braamfontein campus. The march would start at the Great Hall and end on Jan Smuts Avenue.

      Willie - 2012-08-23 13:17

@ mparaya.mokopane why are you so angry. You can't tell people to shutup, people died in this country so that every civilian can have what we call "FREEDOM OF SPEECH,that comes with RESPOSIBILITY". So who are you to tell others to shutup.Stop shouting improve your argument

      ettiene.esterhuizen.7 - 2012-08-23 13:26

Headline should read " Some of SA mourns Marikana dead"!!!!!! Also any person who believes that "muti from a sangoma" will make them invisible and also that they cannot be shot, should be shot again!!!

      sauvignon.blanc.31 - 2012-08-23 13:38

to news 24 readers: How about suppressing your vast ignorance for about a minute and displaying some sensitivity for all the lives lost - not just the policemen or security guards, but also the miners who live lives which you, in your suburban comfort can never imagine. I am not an ANC supporter. i support no political party or politicians. but please explain to me why it is fine if there is the same level of corruption in America or Europe ( except better disguised )and the same politicians in Hugo Boss suits, but if it over there it is fine, but over here they are disgusting. At least the corruption here is in our face and we know about it in all its shameful glory, whereas in the states and europe people truly have no clue what is going on. Please have some sensitivity for the people murdered by the police, for most of you news24 readers, you have no clue about the poverty they experience, no matter how much you think you know the details of their salary or their lives - you know very llittle, and display that with your sad, hateful, highly insensitive comments here. Call me a bleeding heart liberal, if that means that seeing 34 people shot dead by police with AKS then thats what i am! im human! please try and be a bit more human, and less like the politicians who think they know wat they talking about but really dont.

      luvo.luvos - 2012-08-23 13:44

The absolute disrespect shown in these postings by mostly white people really galls the hell out of me. They are treating this event as an absolute circus simply because that no white people were shot in the incident. A tragedy can be deemed as such only if white people were involved. That is a supreme position they have placed themselves in with absolutely no sympathy for any other race whatsoveer. Whatever happened to the saying that if you don't have a good thing to say, don't say anything.

      sauvignon.blanc.31 - 2012-08-23 13:51

to all black south africans: please note that news24 readers are not an accurate portrayal of how white south africans feel. They are a concentrated group of whinging idiots who miss the old south africa and could never afford to immigrate. IF YOU ARE A RACIST, WHAT ARE YOU DOING LIVING IN SOUTH AFRICA...IF YOU HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR THE 34 PEOPLE SHOT DEAD BY POLICE, THEN IM SORRY, BUT YOU ARE A RACIST!!!

      Junebugg - 2012-08-23 14:11

@sauvignon.blanc.31 well said!!!!! I agree with you, most news24 commentators black and white should be deported to a island where they can say all these racist hateful comments to each other... To a normal person who reads here, they will think the views of these people represent the entire race they belong to.. IT IS A VERY SAD THAT WE STILL HAVE SUCH PEOPLE IN SOUTH AFRICA 2012..I pray and hope that the people who post these hateful racist posts here are not from South Africa..I hope it is international people trying to make our citizens look bad because if they do belong in SA, how come I never meet any of these people or you never see them on news expressing their hateful comments??? MAYBE IT IS JUST COWARDS WITH LOW SELF-ESTEEMS WHO HIDE BEHIND THEIR COMPUTERS

      ettiene.esterhuizen.7 - 2012-08-23 14:14

@luvo if whites were involved, no strike would've happen, no charging with pangas would've happen, and most of all NO UNGRATEFULLNESS would've been shown. these animals are so ungratefull and ignorant. Think about it

      Desilusionada - 2012-08-23 17:49

At first I just ignored it, then reread the self appointed moralists' posts as was placed by sauvignonblanc and luvo.luvos. Perhaps just consider this about the so called "insensitive and racist post by whites sitting behind PCs who cannot even imagine the miners' lives": Who, (and of what colour) are making a circus out of 34 (not 44) deaths? All for political expediency and votes? Why was not white person invited to attend the funeral? Who lives a better life? A miner or a white person in a squatter camp? Since the shooting incidence the same amount of children have been murdered, without a single comment from any of the Hugo Boss suits. And then you comment again who is insensitive.................

  • vivian.harris.73 - 2012-08-23 12:45

And what about the 10 that they murdered? What about their families. Are they crying for them too?

      mparaya.mokopane - 2012-08-23 12:52

      Oohhh! please SHUT!! UP!!

      kevin.levey.1 - 2012-08-23 13:05

@ Vivian: Exactly! SA has a culture of supporting criminals (see ANC and Mampara above) which is exactly why this kind of incident happened. Rapist and murderers are mourned by these ANC criminals AND THE MEDIA while the law abiding victims are forgotten!

      Desilusionada - 2012-08-23 13:18

@mamparra Why should we shut up when even the stones cry out about the 3 children who were murdered yesterday and the 3 today and the 3 tomorrow!! The 500 murdered since 2 Security guards were killed in Marikana, the 300 people on our roads.............. When the greatest of hypocrisy is perpetrated? Why should we shut up when the fabric of our society is crumbling?............ Perhaps you should do some introspection and ask yourself, how much guilt do you have and what have you done today (except shout), to change for the better?...

With a big payout in mind, I will collapse as well.

  • marius.vanwyk.5621 - 2012-08-23 12:56

Because of the barbaric way they decide to handle matters, money is thrown their way for a memorial service, how about letting us know where the memorial service for the Police and Security Officers that was MURDERED will be held so we can attend that. Amazingly while this memorial service is held, there are more VIOLENT protests in Pretoria. How many more memorials will be held before the ANC admits they are a failure. I cannot wait for the investigation into this to conclude and hear what maleme will have to say about that.

  • vivian.harris.73 - 2012-08-23 12:58

And why is the headline 'SA mourns...' Its only the people in Marikana and a few politicians looking for votes that's at the memorial service. And they shouldn't vent their anger at the police but at the sangorma that sold them the 'muti'. Clearly it didn't work so they should ask for a refund.

  • black.grimreaper.1 - 2012-08-23 12:59

And if the Police didn't defend themselves and got massacred by the miners? What would the story then have been? These miners that attacked the Police were criminals that wanted blood (they already hacked two cops to death remember) and they were treated by the Police like ALL murderous criminals should be treated. To hell with those mining criminals who are now hailed as heroes! To hell with those who hail those mining criminals as heroes! They fell as cowards that wanted nothing but innocent people to get hurt. If a group of armed impi approaches me like that, I will KILL THEM ALL!

This is so sad.If I remember correctly last year the minister of police ordered police not to even use rubber bullets on strikers. Now this. I still think the police were harsh. I feel the pain of the widows and orphans- all the promises that are made by government today will be broken soon. They won't see a cent from this corrupt government.

      The4thHorsemen - 2012-08-23 13:34

The honorable minister might want to go read the public gatherings act and criminal procedure act, while he is busy with that he might also want to review all the shoot to kill instructions that was given by him and his cronies \r\n\r\nPS: It was some General that gave that order

      gerald.nchabeleng - 2012-08-23 13:43

let us black people remeber this, and never forget even once, of the horror we visited upon ourselves, when black men in uniform gunned down others, let us mourn the dead 44, let us draw inspiration from the likes of Steve Biko, and teach our fellow black brothers the value of self, of black conciousness, and while you are at it join me in printing these news24 comments, and distribute them in the locations and villages, that we never, as a people, vote with those who call us stupid, and deserving of the death we suffered today, while they ditch out life sentences for the murder of ET after giving 12 yrs to the fun seeking murderers of a black man

      jerry.medina.756 - 2012-08-23 13:47

Gerald good thinking, I always said the ANC doesn't have to campaign for elections. They should just copy and paste comments on news24, publish and distribute them. Let people be the judge.

      gerald.nchabeleng - 2012-08-23 13:54

@ Jerry.medina, it actually works, when i started reading news 24, i was at the tip of voting DA, but rude awakening, after engaging white people here i realised it is actually futile to argue, rather focus on black people, when i started printing news24 comments 5 of my friends were in the DA. Only one now remains in the DA while 2 have joined me in my crusade of spreading the word. You dont need to speak politics...just print out the comments, and show them to black people. Apparently, to them, we breed like rabbits, they say in these blogs, let us use those numbers against them - 2012-08-23 14:51

can any of you offer an alternative, what did you expect the police officers to do, stand there and wait to be butchered by an angry mob?? south africa cannot allow violence and intimidation to be the victor in any situation, that is not conducive to a better tomorrow, how does that help? if there was any form of decent leadership then this whole (shooting) matter could have been negotiated and avoided... what about the unions who imo are the main instigators, where do they fit into all of this? whenever there is a large public gathering or coming together of people, surely there needs to be some form of law enforcement to oversee matters and ensure law and order is upheld and maintained? i mourn for the loss of life and the fact that a situation like this was even allowed to gain momentum to the point of civil violence and unrest, to which our police force reacted, i mourn for south africa for she is a rudderless vessel... "will the real slim shady please stand up"

      Desilusionada - 2012-08-23 16:52

@gerald.nchabeleng No you do not breed like rabbits. That is racist and wrong. You breed at the levels instructed by your president and the example he sets. And we all know he is a proponent of no extramarital sex, no children out of wedlock, and monogamy, now is he not?.... I mean you would not disagree with the ANC and the leadership would you?

  • butch.poulter - 2012-08-23 13:20

A group of people murders 10 people. The murderers deliberately provoke a confrontation with the police in which they come out losers. The government and politicians then fall over themselves to soothe these killers completely ignoring the real victims, the original 10 dead. And then a government minister wants the world to believe everything is normal!!!

  • emiel.vandenhoute - 2012-08-23 16:56

Having watched the Reuters video it's difficult not to conclude that our riot police were less than professional (no formation even risking "friendly fire" casualties as they were mowing down 10 or so people as if it was a battalion they were fighting) and used excessive violence on a crowd of +/- 10 where some 2 pistols were found? Did they never play video games where you have to recognise friend or foe before firing? I think it's unfair to make a black or white decision on murderers and victims. Psychology of masses has a powerful impact, especially among less educated people (ask Hitler). Blame for the disaster lies in various degrees with all parties involved. Just a shame the Minister of Police does not accept political responsibility and resigns, but then one would not expect this from someone who refuses to repay slush funds money that built his private security walls. Marikana is a tragedy for all especially the families of all 44. It will remain written in the annals of SA history.
